A person at my place of work has said they will go to work sick rather than have sick pay.
Selfish towards other workers but he said hes putting his family first and they need the money.

I think "putting the family 1st" and go to work when ill with Covid-19 symptoms in this instance is selfish and misguided because if the entire family will need to self-isolate thus the consequences are significantly more horrendous.

Self-employed people should have paid more attention to the budget on Wednesday.

Those who are not eligible for SSP, for example the self-employed or people earning below the Lower Earnings Limit of £118 per week, can now more easily make a claim for Universal Credit or Contributory Employment and Support Allowance:

  - for the duration of the outbreak, the requirements of the Universal Credit Minimum Income Floor will be temporarily relaxed for those who have COVID-19 or are self-isolating according to government advice, ensuring self-employed claimants will receive support

  - people will be able to claim Universal Credit and access advance payments upfront without the current requirement to attend a jobcentre if they are advised to self-isolate

  - contributory Employment and Support Allowance will be payable, at a rate of £73.10 a week if you are over 25, for eligible people affected by COVID-19 or self-isolating in line with advice from Day 1 of sickness, rather than Day 8.

It is part of the human condition to be inherently selfish.
All that changes between individuals is the degree to which they are afflicted by the condition.

don't want to be flippant but I suppose they could have been putting the money they save on NI PAYMENTS INTO A RAINY DAY JAR, in all these situations you cant expect not to pay in to the xmas club and then expect to draw come december like those who have,

Government sick pay is hardly enough to live on after picking up proper wages.

But those who make the rules, like all public sector workers can take time off on full pay.

This situation where some of the workforce get sick leave on full pay, and the rest have to get by on a government pittance when they're ill, and that's after a certain number of days has elapsed. Has always seemed very unfair to me.

Why haven't the unions ever had a go at getting it changed?

Why didn't the Labour government who were in power for 13 years address it?

How can you have a union, or a Labour government that believes in different levels of employment rights for workers?

And they call themselves socialists; they're no more socialists than Donald Trump.

you got full pay for 6 months and half pay after that

It's always amazed me that hourly paid workers stand for losing money when they're sick.

Public sector workers and staff workers in the private sector, can take time of on full pay for the slightest excuse. Yet hourly paid workers even get their money docked for simply turning up late.

And amongst these we see the types who are the most militant supporters of the labour movement.

Do they stand for it because they're all thick or what?
Report Dr Crippen March 13, 2020 11:59 AM GMT
I think we'll find that the only ones who will be self-isolating, will be workers who get paid to stay at home.

The rest will only take time off if they're too ill to go.
Which is how it works anyway.

if you go to work ill with this virus you should be banged up

no one should be getting sick pay  ...you should only earn what you have worked for .

mortgage holidays will be a godsend ...i took one myself years ago when i was not earning  ...but the only  problem will be the renters ... maybe housing benefit rules could apply in that one  situation

tbh I dont think this is selfish at all, imo its the opposite, its selfish to expect this man and his family to suffer for something which isnt his fault, the government should be sending china a massive compensation bill

The Chinese government ought to be asked to help paying for this virus of their making; China can afford it. Also, I think if they'd been more forthcoming and not secretive about the whole thing instead allowed professional experts into their country the consequences would have been less and possibly contained/confined. Now it's spread to the entire world.

If you phone 111 they'll tell you to stay at home for a week.

So straight away the majority of public sector workers will come down with the virus, and take their week off on full pay.

The problem comes later on if they genuinely catch the virus and have to have another week off.

But knowing the public sector nothing would be said anyway.

Marvellous innit.
Report 1st time poster March 14, 2020 1:04 PM GMT
think government is going to have to think of some sort of a short term version of this universal wage/payment for everyone
