Ireland banning mass gatherings of more than 100 as from tomorrow until 29th March even schools. Would that mean no Irish horse  racing until then?

Outdoor gatherings of 500, i would think racing will go ahead.

Fair play, positive move re schools and colleges, they are at least trying to put people before pounds.

Report lapsy pa March 12, 2020 11:44 AM GMT
You would be lucky to get 500 at a minor meeting,i don't see any problem really as TV rights and not crowds is where the bobs are.

Nothing in the horse racing papers or emanating from the Irish Racing fraternity.
Report lapsy pa March 12, 2020 11:46 AM GMT
With the statement itself it is a major blow for the economy as children need to be looked after but the plus is delaying the spread, probably the right time to call it.
Report lapsy pa March 12, 2020 11:51 AM GMT
fook the racing if it saves any lives.
Report impossible123 March 12, 2020 11:52 AM GMT
Banning mass gathering of more than 100 indoors, and 500 outdoors. With schools, colleges and childcare facilities affected I'd have thought sporting activities like horse racing will be affected to in the very near future, if not effectively begging the logical question why sporting activities should be treated differently?
Report lapsy pa March 12, 2020 11:57 AM GMT
They are,Gaa matches etc cancelled.

Cheltenham shouldn't be on,disgraceful really.

Gold Cup day tomorrow.
Report impossible123 March 12, 2020 12:02 PM GMT
I agree given the stance Ireland is taking. But, Cheltenham ain't in Ireland (sadly). The lives of people before anything else, that's my motto.

There's still tomorrow. Who knows the British Government could follow the Irish route. But, maybe next week or after 29th March.

There ought to be a concerted and mirror approach by every country/government to tackle this pandemic, not just unilaterally and at the whim of the politicians.

What's happening in certain parts in Italy is scary.
Report lapsy pa March 12, 2020 12:30 PM GMT
It is a hard call though, you are effectively ruining peoples livelyhood in shutting down places though they are in trouble due to consumers avoiding movement anyway.

Sport is one of the few things that takes your mind off all the doom and gloom for a while, all a big realism check, you realise how lucky you are and take too much for granted.

Something I've not heard mentioned is that there's a lot of drinking at sporting events.  This not only means a lot of visits to the toilet but also the effect of alcohol on one's attitude - less caution, more recklessness.  How thoroughly are you going to wash your hands after a few beers, especially if you just want to get back to the action.

And what about nightclubs?  Several hundred people under the influence of alcohol, getting close, kissing and in a hot, humid, sweaty environment.

I also suspect that even a moderate amount of alcohol lowers the body's resistance to viruses.  I seem to recall reading that it depletes the amount of Vitamin C in the system.

It's just a matter of time post the action of the Irish government. I'm expecting schools and colleges in the UK will shut soon after - whether this week or next.

My only question is why the delay esp the infant, young and elderly would be the ones more susceptible to this virus.

I hope the Irish Cheltenham racegoers will not be forced to self-isolate. On this matter Michael O'Leary (his brother was) was not present when Samcro won, or was he?

I've deliberately not ventured out the last couple of days to minimise risk, but I hope when I do go shopping tomorrow there is stuff on the supermarket shelves otherwise frozen produce in the freezer to last me for at least 2 weeks with careful planning.

Capitalism as we know it...... tethering

SMASH THE MIDDLE
Report impossible123 March 12, 2020 4:51 PM GMT
I'm not young but I was hoping I do not see empty shelves in supermarkets - one or two shelves were a bit sparse eg tin foods. I do not think we can blame capitalism. It's more the herd mentality of the older generation - those who'd experienced 2nd world war. But, I do not blame them either as they've experienced what I've not. Worst comes worst I might have to start eating more eggs, pasta and rice and less veggie, fish or fruits.

Can anyone really believe the recent figure from China ie 5 new cases only (if memory serves)?
Report lapsy pa March 12, 2020 6:43 PM GMT
As a prelude Impossible you have massive supermarket queues this evening,(tesco Dublin 15 had to close due to public order offences,a lot of pubs now shutting, it is herd mentality the shelves will be restocked, still prudent to have a bit extra in for yourself.

The Chinese figures are very wrong i think.
Report impossible123 March 12, 2020 8:13 PM GMT
I'm in England, and on tuesday a slightly longer queue at the self-checkout at Tesco and Sainsbury not totally unusual given it was lunch time. I'll know more tomorrow as I'm doing my regular weekend shop perhaps a little a bit more of a few certain perishable items but no extra loo rolls or beans.
Report mafeking March 12, 2020 9:28 PM GMT
apparently online shopping only accounts for 7% supermarket sales. do 93% of the population still really like trooping around the shop each week ? Shocked
Report politicspunter March 12, 2020 9:38 PM GMT
Supermarkets lose money on online shopping. They simply do it so they are the same as competitors.
Report mafeking March 12, 2020 9:40 PM GMT
of course they do but that doesn't explain why punters rather go in the shop still. i reckon it costs something like £15 per delivery but i pay less than a quid

Meanwhile - the over-reactive Varadkar is in the USA - well away from all the panic that he has caused
Report politicspunter March 12, 2020 9:50 PM GMT
A quick online shopping guide- Your packet of biscuits/ fish fingers is ordered (call centre/IT support etc), collected by a "shopper", scanned bagged and placed in a separate area/ freezer in a different dedicated section of the store, overseen be team leaders and an online manager, collected by a driver who is trained and signed off by an outside agency, put in his leased delivery van fuelled and maintained by the supermarket chain, delivered to the customer who, if the order is big enough, gets a tenner discount. Any returns from customers are taken back to store, unloaded and placed back on shelves/freezer.

Try and make money out of that.
Report impossible123 March 13, 2020 8:24 AM GMT
For certain items eg fruits, fish and meat are best bought instore as one could choose and not leave to the judgement of their staff. However, I do do a big shop online for favourites (if on special offers) eg wild red salmon/duck breast if accompanied with discount vouchers.
Report lapsy pa March 13, 2020 8:40 AM GMT
@ Onlooker,he(LV) has flown back this morning, yes,a certain amount of panic, meanwhile your PM answer seems to be f8ck people, the economy comes 1st,let them(the population) catch it and that will build up immunity for the future???????

Is that correct? You happy with that? Do they know best?

Bit like the turkey having a christmas party, racist impossible coming on here talking about racing in ireland that he cant afford to watch on racing tv. For your information i was in cheltenham three days. Most english blokes washed their hands in the toilet, very few used the hand sanitizers which were especially introduced as i understand it.... as for masks not one spotted anywhere except bristol airport. There was absolutely very little consideration for the virus in the u k. When i arrived back in ireland last night it was like chalk and cheese. Irish much more pro active,  prepared and more scarred of it.

I went into a couple of supermarkets and eggs, bread and loo rolls were sparse. Even shoppers with hand baskets seemed to be buying more. If this gets worse (I think it will before it gets better) more panic buying will surely follow on today's observation.

I am of the belief that this virus was here in ireland before christmas. Good friend plays santy  and twelve days before xmas he had a little kid from china sneeze on him whilst his mum who was also chinese was taking pictures. She told him the kid wasnt well. Few days later my mate was off sick from work, then i got it and so did my wife, so did four others from a pre christmas get together.( My friend , 82 years of age, died on January 12th.) About a week before xmas, my doc confirmed I had a chest infection caused by a virus. i couldnt stop coughing. He gave me nothing to start , saying antibiotics were harmful and you can build up an immunity against them ,he told me paracetomol , not the first time i ignored him, I was back on xmas eve, he gave me steroids and an antibiotic and that was xmas cancelled for us. I seriously think this virus was not found in china until the chinese authorities put a name on it in december. If it was about in November the figures would have been building there just as they are now across europe.
Report lapsy pa March 15, 2020 10:09 PM GMT
Someone said to me him and his wife got some dose like nothing before and thinks it was the virus  about 5/6 weeks ago, he was a fella that won't be over reacting but saying that a good few viruses out there.

Very likely the whispers are correct and complete lockdown imminent particulary with the planes have to be in by Thursday.
