lack of available bed spaces at the nearest institutions is usually the answer given.

more pertinent question is why are they kept locked up for so long? that's the bigger national scandal, some of the stories I've heard, even when parents get there sometimes they cannot have physical contact. The care system in Britain, be it the elderly, the young, the mentally incapacitated, has always been appalling.

Yes they were very good.....kept the mentally unwell away from society and society away from them

Worse still when the authorities cut their knackers off and put them in a dress.

Those rambling old asylums were something else. As 14 year olds who had elected to leave school at 15 (fancy asking 14 year olds that question ) we were told to walk a mile or so unaccompanied to our local nut house, Oulton Hall, one day a week. We pretty much did as we liked there in the safe areas. The slavering **** covered ones were in a locked day room with a glass panel between us and them.
There was an old boy who didn't speak and couldn't walk. He moved around the floor cross legged on his arse, he could also beat anyone at dominos, we liked him.
One nice day we thought he might like the grounds, couldn't really ask him so we carried him (to save his arse on the gravel) to the woods, put him on some grass and got down to messing around. After a while we realised he had vanished, and after a fruitless search of the grounds we went back in intending to say nowt. The old bugger was there cross legged on a chair playing dominos.

This just one of many problems in society and I don't see the situation getting better, how CAN it? Be serious, heads out of sand time, it's not possible. Money is king, we're all guilty of that one. We don't have the funds and there simply isn't room. And we're breeding like rats.

Fair comment moisok, too many fragile egos out there. Maybe we, as a species, are rapidly approaching our "best-by date". We definitely on a downward spiral imo.

Go into A and E, say you feel like killing yourself... they run around and try to find you a bed for a week.  I know this to be a fact.

This seems a very exploitable system...

a brilliant defence if you are no good at your job, school etc etc

I've often thought about that. First off: I don't believe in failed suicide attempts.
And secondly: I wonder how many people would claim to be feeling suicidal if they were offered an easy painless drug induced suicide. Free. No charge. Just sign here please and wait your turn.The Doctor will be with you in a moment. Mmm?

Mental Illness is nothing like as easy as people might think to fake

Wanting to commit suicide is not a mental illness....it just means things are going bad in peoples lives

and they see no hope of any improvement.

People with mental illness are possibly slightly more prone than normal people to commit suicide

Their mental illness often gives them greater problems in life, most people with mental illness are not happy about it

You would require some previous, for this to happen. (Prob a diagnosis)...

It's not just "young folk". This forum has a number on it who, shall we say, don't show the UK mental health system in a good light.
You wouldn't sit beside them on a bus, that's for sure. Back when we were allowed to use buses before the shady hidden international/lizard/US/chinese/lizard/UN [delete according to whackjob preference] conspiracy spread coronavirus to depopulate us and lead to a controlled global fascist crackdown on our freedoms.
