His rape and sexual assault convictions were a landmark moment in the #MeToo movement, as at least 80 women had accused him of sexual misconduct going back decades.
Advertisement But Ms Rotunno - who has a reputation as legal Rottweiler - has remained unflinchingly loyal to Weinstein. She was accused during the trial of taunting witnesses, of bringing them to tears and inducing panic attacks. Now, she has said the women who testified against Weinstein were using him. "They were guilty of making Harvey Weinstein do things, making him believe that they wanted to be with him, that they wanted to spend time with him," she said. "And then get up on a witness stand and call him disgusting - sending him letters saying 'miss you big guy,' sending letters saying 'love you lots'. I mean how is that ok? How are we as a society saying men all bad, women all good when we look at that evidence. How do we reconcile that?" When Sky News' US correspondent Amanda Walker asked if that behaviour warranted sexual assault, Ms Rotunno said she was "talking about two different things". "You're asking me if the women were guilty - I'm telling you that they were guilty of certain things. No behaviour warrants sexual assault, none," she said. But Ms Rotunno has previously said that she has never been sexually assaulted because she would never put herself in that situation. Asked if she was implying there is a choice in being sexually assaulted, she said she was indicating that there is "choice in circumstances in which we put ourselves". Whatever happens at Weinstein's sentencing, Ms Rotunno said she will be sad for her client who she described as "wickedly intelligent". "You know, the people who criticised me, I don't really think they think about the big picture and I don't understand what they were hoping for," she said. "Were they hoping that we would let people walk into a courtroom, tell their stories and not be asked any questions? It doesn't make any sense, that's not how a court procedure works." Weinstein's convictions happened with no forensic evidence and instead came down to the jurors accepting the testimony of his accusers. Ms Rotunno did not welcome the fact that this marked the beginning of a shift in the way sex assault cases are tried. "If this becomes a pattern or a model for the way juries decide cases, I think every single person who finds themselves charged with a crime should be concerned," she said. "Because if we are finding people guilty, when there are mountains of doubt and very little evidence - if any at all - I think we need to question what the justice system looks like." Walker suggested the idea of women coming to police with test tubes of evidence seemed unrealistic, to which Ms Rotunno said "that's not true". "The question is, do you have to believe someone just because they make a statement? If you're looking at it through a moral lens, everyone's guilty, but that's not what we do in a criminal justice system, that's not how it works," Ms Rotunno said. Ms Rotunno went on to say that she does not think men have any power anymore because "a woman can say anything she wants and they're going to be believed". "That takes away every ounce of power that a man has. The pendulum is swinging so far in another direction that I think that it's dangerous and scary and nobody's going to change my mind about that." Ahead of his sentencing, Weinstein's defence team, have asked that he be shown mercy for his already "historic fall from grace". |

For the education of dopey b0llocks ( angoose)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_punishments_for_murder_in_the_United_States so as I said, some murderers will serve less than weinstein. He may or may not deserve the length of sentence but it isn't consistent with other crimes and clearly motivated by pressure from the media to make an eg of him |

i have to agree with what his lawyer says in my above post, i reckon 99% of men must hope none of their exes/ one night stand makes a accusation .

I suspect he is a seedy individual but let's face it , if it wasnt in the public eye there isnt a chance in hell he would get 23 years. Of course no one dares say this , we all have to virtue signal like the OP over how terrible it is but secretly thinking its a disproportional sentence. If any main stream male individual said it was a harsh sentence he would be labelled a woman hating misogynist condoner of abuse etc etc or be the reincarnation of satan hiding raped women in the basement.
I havent really followed the case closely but believe he received 20 years for rape of a female? You can make a case for saying that's a just sentence but then seem to recall a famous American boxer in the early 90s out in 4 years for the same offence... one was a hero for many in the boxing ring and one is a symbol of the hatred women have stored for men for decades made an eg of. As ellsjohn says , all it takes is a jilted ex gf to make an accusation and once social media starts up screaming how awful it is over an event they didnt witness or know what is truth/lies , it's essentially the rest of your life behind bars. |

Weinstein a sleazy character who no doubts abused his power but I wonder how many of his victims careers were boosted by the same 'abuse'.

It is good to know for the sake of 'me too' movement and women that this chap is behind bars based on the clear sexist behaviour of this man.
And knowing that NOT ONE threw themselves at him for commercial or job reasons. So in america you can just walk into court accusing anyone of any thing. I hope they know what they are doing with absolutely no evidence |
|
By:
this is clearly a politically motivated case by that movement

of course he is a sleazy character, but this verdict is shocking,[ beyond all reasonable doubt]
. how the hell can he be convicted on this Haley has said that, after the alleged attack in Weinstein’s apartment, she met the producer at a hotel in Tribeca. “I feel like I was trying to regain some sort of power or something,” she testified. “He pulled or led me onto the bed and I didn’t resist physically, I just laid there.” Her voice broke. “I felt like an idiot for having believed whatever he was saying,” said Haley. “I felt numb, I felt numb, I felt like an idiot, and I felt numb.” |

Sleazy Weintein was abusing his position of power - he'd make or break a wannabe actress. What Weinstein has done is not confined to that industry. It happened in Politics and even in the Law profession. For instance, friend of mine who was then a newly qualified solicitor was propositioned by a senior member of the Law firm post an unsuccessful job interview a few days earlier was invited by text (at night) to a dinner with him (he was one of 3 conducting the interview) on the presumption he was setting up his own law firm and was looking for staff.
And, no guessing the nationality of this potential sleazebag. |
