I have been saying for a while that Britain is far too dependent on imported goods food in particular.
I have said is what if a worldwide crisis threatened either the price or availability of these imported foods; it would leave us exposed because we have no contingency plan. I must admit a virus was not at the top of my potential disaster causes, I thought it would be either war or something to do with climate change.
What this crisis has shown us all is how vulnerable the worldwide supply chain is in real terms.
What Britain needs to become self sufficient and soon. We have renewable energy that will allow us to grow and farm in a way that was simply not feasible before

Go on, then. Give up your job. Stop wasting your time on here, and go out and work on a farm instead. Christmas Day, Bank Holidays, every Saturday and Sunday, all through Cheltenham. Be on call 24/7. Be poor. Be self-sufficient in food.

Or might it make more sense to keep your job, stick with the punting and pay some poor sod in a country with better climate and poverty-level wages to do the work themselves?

Macaroni says we have to become self-sufficient in food, where there's a will there's a way. I'm wondering where all that renewable energy that he speaks of might be, perhaps we can go carbon neutral already.
No millers around here, the cats scare them off.

Went to my local Tesco this morning and nothing looked different. There was even an introductory offer at a reduced price on a new "flavour" of a hand wash product! Central Somerset is probably a bit more laid back than London though. I do agree about food supplies as an ex farmer who sold up because it was not profitable in 2000. None of the 4 people who bought our land needs to make a profit from it. Home production of most food items falls every year. I do have 2 acres of grass that could be planted with vegetables if the worst happens but growing your own is more expensive than a supermarket if you value your own labour.

My supermarket Morrison’s had a 2 for 1 offer on Bog Roll!

I only wanted one pack of nine but bought two packs and took the discount!

Sums up the lack of leadership in this and most countries. Pathetic!

Went on the Tube on Friday. Nobody wore latex gloves, one wore a mask. No hand sanitizer on any train station. None in any bar, none in my gym. No order to mass produce hand sanitiser and yet

We can still fly to Italy and bring back the lurgy

20,000 passengers booked flights to Rome this weekend but did the FCO issue a no flight decree? Who has shares in Insurance Companies or Airlines!

Pathetic lack of leadership and Government!

On the plus side there is plenty of Andrew left at MorrisonsLaugh

"...... but the chance of catching it is about the same as backing all 28 winners at Cheltenham."

It seems the most risk you have of catching it if you are within about 3-foot of anyone who has got it ! And what makes this so scary anyone who has contracted the disease can start spreading it around before they develop symptoms. And also in the early stages someone could be spreading it although they might only be feeling a bit unwell. Seems to progress in stages, and then suddenly shoots up. Hour by hour this is getting worse. Very scary stuff.

Popped to Tesco Express at Brayton this morning, just for some vino, fruit, cheese, milk etc...

At the checkouts was a wall of 16 packs of Andrex.

Interestingly, no displayed price, but I bought a pack anyway!

Worryingly is the fact that, to my knowledge, it all comes from China, so I doubly washed my hands when back here!

Bunzl, a British company that I own shares in is a very big producer of all use once products including loo and kitchen rolls but not sure where they make it. I did read because of the high volume, low value nature of the product, most of it is made in UK. Andrex is nearly all UK made

Toilet rolls:  shelves are sparse but still available
Liquid soap:  out of stock Friday and Saturday but some on sale today

Anti-bacterial gel: no chance - totally sold out and has been for about two weeks

The media have stoked the panic. If you tell people it’s deadly and millions will die it’s not surprising people stock up.,

The t roll is an odd one though. How much do people use? Shocked
Report screaming from beneaththewaves March 9, 2020 4:59 PM GMT
I think it's what happens if you tell people that most will need to self-isolate for several weeks at some point. Good advice, but it requires urgently stockpiling every possible requirement for the entire household. Otherwise it won't be self-isolation.

It's people acting entirely rationally imo. If you don't have an absolute minimum of one month's worth of everything, then panic hard and, most importantly, panic first.
Report i_agree_with_nick March 9, 2020 4:59 PM GMT
We're at the stage now where people are panic buying because many other people are doing the same, not directly because of the threat of COVID-19.

There are also people buying up large stocks of gel, wipes etc to sell online.

Just got back from ASDA. Fresh meat in abundance, but tins and pasta are definitely low on stock, especially the latter where there was no choice at all. Didn't check toilet roll or soap as not required at present.

People are totally pathetic as usual. When i went last night there was a guy loading what must of been at least 100 tins into his car. So caught up in their own little world they dont even realise everyone else is laughing at them.
Report Aspro March 10, 2020 11:04 AM GMT
The problem here is the knock-on effect. Take the pasta for example, there is even a separate thread on it, which I hadn't seen before I posted the above. The shelves were totally empty of pasta. When others see new stock they will now naturally overstock, because of the situation others are causing... and so the crisis deepens.
Report Whisperingdeath March 10, 2020 1:11 PM GMT
