First case now confirmed in Sunny Scotland Sad

I wonder what the death rate is for Corona virus?
Hong Kong flu killed below 0.5% of those who got infected.

With a death rate that low, and most of those who snuffed it knocking on deaths door anyway, I can't understand what the fuss is about.
Report i_agree_with_nick March 2, 2020 11:29 AM GMT
I think the worry is that because this is a new virus, there is no immunity or vaccine and therefore 20-80% of the population could be infected.

In this scenario, how would the NHS cope?
Report Dr Crippen March 2, 2020 11:38 AM GMT
When I had Flu many years ago I didn't even bother going to the doctor's.
When I was strong enough to go I was almost over it.

Mind you they go to see the doctor with a cold these days.

What can the doctor do once you've got it anyway?
Report i_agree_with_nick March 2, 2020 11:50 AM GMT
Generally, there is no need to see a GP if you have cold or flu but a small percentage of people are hospitalised.  This happens year after year so the system manages.

COVID-19 is a new and more contagious virus. Some people will have to be hospitalised and some will need intensive care.  If there is a major outbreak, there isn't the capacity to cope.
Report Dr Crippen March 2, 2020 12:19 PM GMT
What is intensive care for Flu - a nurse coming along to fluff up your pillow every half an hour?

Most people won't even have a day off work, well those who don't get paid if they're absent won't.

Those who do get paid will have a fortnight off.

Dr C - they will be on a ventilator. They might be on fluids and anti-viral drugs (possibly on a drip).

You're right about most people but in the event of a major outbreak of COVID-19, a small percentage amounts to many thousands of cases.

A doctor on radio 5 this morning says normal flu has a higher death rate. Doubt if she’ll be asked back...
