Frank Burnside was iconic but great calls with some of the others nominated too.

Another suggestion - Alastair Sim (An Inspector Calls - 1954). Brilliantly portrayed.

Nobody could possibly quarrel with Jack "Guv" Regan, I feel sure.

Last time I saw Frank Windsor on TV, he was sporting a cardigan and singing the praises of "Mirrrrracle Grrrrrro" for the garden plants (and funerrrrrral plans).

Bernard Cribbins, although he wasn't actually the inspector whose visit Basil Fawlty was dreading. And the plot's just a rip-off of Gogol's The Government Inspector anyway.

Not a lot of love on this thread for Inspector Lynley.
I enjoyed many of the books long before the tv series and was very disappointed when I saw what they had produced.

Similar story with Inspector Rebus, my picture of Rebus was significantly different from that delivered by John Hannah who was woefully miscast, whilst even Ken Stott failed to deliver a credible alternative.

Frank Windsor was in the film "Spring and Port Wine", shown on Talking pictures last night, nice film set in 60s Bolton with James Mason and Diana Coupland, with the very young and gorgeous Susan George and Hannah Gordon playing the daughters.

If you are a currently serving police officer, then you will no doubt be aiming for a position higher up in the force.

There are many ways to progress within the police, but one of the most popular routes, is to take the Police Sergeants’ and Inspectors’ Exam.

Once you’ve taken these examinations, you will be ready to start work as – you guessed it – a police sergeant or inspector.

Reg Hollis would have made an exceptional Chief Inspector.
Really should have been a spin off from The Bill with Reg strutting his stuff overseeing a special unit investigating train set forgery.

Kenny Everett in one of his sketches.
He walked into bank and said "i am the inspector of taxes"
bank manager asked "have you proof you are the inspector of taxes?"
Kenny Everett opened a brief case, took out a stone(rock) and squeezed it,and blood came gushing out of it.Laugh
