Greenday are 5th on the list, Creed are last.
not on the list are the goo goo dolls who were called the sex maggots ![]() Oasis were called Rain which you could never imagine being chanted at their gigs as it's quite dull never given much thought as to how or why band names evolve, have no idea what coldplay means or why U2 are called U2 etcm would make a good thread on it's own actually |

The band finally settled on the name "Coldplay" which was suggested by Tim Crompton, a local student who had been using the name for his group.
They were originally called Pectoralz and then Starfish. |

By:
Steve Averill, a punk rock musician (with the Radiators) and family friend of Clayton's, had suggested six potential names from which the band chose "U2" for its ambiguity and open-ended interpretations, and because it was the name that they disliked the least.

U2 named themselves after the US high-altitude spy plane. Why, though, is another question.
I had the misfortune of seeing them in April 1981, supporting John Cale at London's Lyceum, in the Strand. The audience wasn't happy in the first place, because Subway Sect had been billed as the support, but Subway Sect had disbanded, which they tended to do every few weeks. So we got this plodding college rock band from 1974 instead. The curtain went up to reveal some long lengths of guttering placed at the back of the stage behind the drumkit and spelling out the characters 'U' and '2'. This, I believe, is why they chose the name: it fitted some lengths of guttering they had handy. This was confirmed by the guitarist, who commented: "Look, the lads were U7 before oi met 'em, to be sure, but oi brought me own bit o' guttering with me, so oi did, 'n' that's how oi became the edge out o' U2, begorrah." |
