Nicholas Sutton, aged 18 in 1979 when he knocked his grandmother, who had raised him, unconscious and dumped her in the river.  She drowned.  After his conviction he confessed to 2 more murders - that of his school friend and a 46 year-old man.  However, for these he received life sentences, not the death penalty.  That came in 1985 when he took part in the killing of a child rapist.  Not for his crime but because of an argument over drugs.  It is for this killing that he was sentenced to death and, if it is carried out, he will be the first person executed for killing another prisoner.  He had the option of lethal injection but chose electrocution.  This seems to be more popular of late amongst those who are given a choice.  This is interesting as lethal injection was introduced to replace electrocution.  Switch on will probably be about 01:17, based on previous Tennesseean electrocutions.

Tennessee executed death row inmate Nicholas Todd Sutton in the electric chair Thursday night, marking the fifth time the state has used the method since 2018.

Sutton, 58, was pronounced dead at 7:26 p.m. CST, according to the Tennessee Department of Correction.

He was the 139th person put to death in Tennessee since 1916, and the seventh inmate executed since the state resumed capital punishment in August 2018.

Lee declined Sutton's clemency application earlier this week. The U.S. Supreme Court denied a request for a stay minutes before he was put to death.

His clemency application cited accounts from three prison officers who said Sutton stepped in to save their lives when he didn't have to, twice stepping between staff and angry inmates to diffuse potentially lethal conflicts.

Sutton, 58, ordered fried pork chops, mashed potatoes with gravy and peach pie with vanilla ice cream, according to the Tennessee Department of Correction. Death row inmates typically have a $20 limit for their last meal.

Switch-on was at 01:18 our time so I was 1 minute out!  Apparently the daughter of the older man he'd killed turned up but as he wasn't officially being executed for that particular murder she wasn't allowed in.

state sponsored killing is an abomination whatever the circumstances. however it is interesting that this subject is highlighted when it occurs in the u.s. every execution that happens there is subject to media scrutiny, numerous appeals, and vociferous protests against it, rightly imo. few states allow it, and the number of murderers killed is small.

but executions are carried out in secret, without scrutiny of judicial process, however flimsy, in many other countries every day. you never hear about them. no appeal, no protest, no media outrage, no louis theroux snooping around, no concern for the family; utter contempt for human rights and common decency. the peoples republic of china kills people all the time. in fact it executes more than any country in the world. why is it not the subject of international sanctions? it kidnaps people abroad, who then 'confess'. even the chief of interplod, a chinese national, was spirited back to china, where he was tortured into admitting all sorts of laughable crimes. china is one example but there are others. lots of them in asia, like vietnam, burma, laos. never mind the giant concentration camp that is the socialist peoples republic of north korea.

all states of the middle east kill dissidents(nb, not people convicted of murder by due process), particularly iran, although saudi is often held up as a pariah. this is because an amount of blame can be attached to the west, where the filthy saudi camel-bangers buy their weapons. and never mind that assad, the greatest mass-killer (so far) of the 21st century gets his bombs from that well-known lover of humanitarianism, putin.

all murder is wrong, the only saving grace for the u.s. version is that is is judicial. but it is small-scale. the far greater crimes against humanity that occur elsewhere go unremarked. i would bring in a simple rule for all civilised nations. if you kill people there will be no trade, no tourism, no freedom of movement, no sporting links, nothing. get stuffed. i think it would work with startling rapidity

The big question for me, is that if such as the USA do feel that they must have the death penalty, either for revenge,
or as a dubious deterrent, why is it necessary to have the drama of the chosen method?

I understand that there are only two states who will supply the cocktail of drugs for 'lethal injection'!

Why does it have to be so aggressive?

There is, I believe, just one state who will support voluntary euthanasia, and I recall that not so long ago, one beautiful young woman took that course, rather than suffer the certain ongoing pain, and where she would have no control!

We can also elect for the same choice in The Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland and Luxembourg!

The one common factor, is that the patient has to self administer the drug!

Don't tell me, that these unfortunate people are going to be strapped down, and writhing in agony for this to work!

You must have read the epitaphs, where people have died "peacefully in their sleep"!

I watched my own wife slip away in the hospice, with no drama, having been administered the appropriate drug....

I agree with you Lady

They seem to want execution to be some kind of revenge for the family of the victim

so the perpetrator has to be seen to be suffering before they die.

I totally disagree with this. Death is surely enough punishment.

But then I have always thought the US was a very vindictive society,

as well as very violent, so I am not sure what they achieve by this?????????????????
