Have any of you had this done?

I'm really concerned, as I've been referred for this in March!

The worry is the possibility of side effects, such as....creating or exacerbating tinnitus, damage to ear drum, or infection!

I can't afford any issues, as I am totally deaf in one ear, and have perhaps 5% in the other!
It's actually incredible that my hearing aid can give the amount of correction that it does!

To give you some idea...my house phone is on my desk and with my hearing aid it is very loud, but if I remove it, unless I turn
to face it, I wouldn't know it was ringing!

I wouldn't go there Lady V. Any sort of suction not good on ears imo. And, if you've have Tinnitus like me, even some ear drops can be harmful. If you've got wax go see your doc and have your ears washed out. That's what I do. The process is quick easy and you don't feel a thing. hth.

Yes ericster, I have been through that process on three occasions, of which all had positive results.

I think that a lot of these procedures are reliant on the skill of the operative, and that's what is worrying me!

With syringing it has been different every time....

The first was comfortable and productive....the second was cold and fierce, and the last one was as if it was a jet wash!

I understand that the suction is not blasting the wax into submission, and can go deeper into the ear canal!

One worry is, seeing an official comment stating that damage to the eardrum is usually caused by sudden movement of the patient!

Well, of course they would say that, but all I know is that I have been made to react, when the doctor/nurse has gone too far
with the inspection scope...albeit that they have denied it!

My appointment is not until the 15th March, so I have plenty of time to gather some case histories, to support my thinking.

Wax is a normal body fluid, it protects the ears from very small insects etc

No wax causes all kinds of things

If your wax will be micro-sucked by an ENT surgeon, that is one thing; by someone in a shop, quite another.

You can clear ear wax yourself using specialist tools with built in miniature cameras and lights. The pictures relay to your mobile phone and allow the user to be REAL careful.

Torquemada.....good grief, I think I will give that a miss.....

As for who would do it....all I know is that I'm due in the ENT department, at York District Hospital.

Lady Faye, I would go ahead with the appointment and express your concerns to the ENT specialist. If there are risks they will be fully explained and you can then make up your mind whether or not to have the procedure. Try not to worry about it until then, it wont help you.

Listen to highly skilled medical professionals and not random strangers on the internet? What madness is this?
