I'd be more worried about the Chinese Grand Prix. Japan is a different country entirely.

It is 1,500 miles from Wuhan to Tokyo; about the same distance as London to Moscow. Would you cancel your kids' school trip to the Science Museum because people were dying in Moscow?

Easy story if it's the Olympics, even if the chance of postponement is minimal.  Chinese Grand Prix isn't really worthy news.

There are already 86 people in Japan with the virus and there are 25 countries other than China with cases (another 4 Brits in a French ski resort today) and the numbers will continue to grow. The Japanese are already very worried about whether or not the virus can be controlled and I think that the prospect of people coming from all over the world will soon be too daunting a prospect for them and they will cancel the Games. Forgone conclusion that there will be no GP in China this year.

Don’t worry though, Trump will declare the virus as a hoax and fake news, all will be well.

Alternatively, he’ll point the finger of blame at Huawei.

I hadn't thought about that Clydebank, it really depends how well the Europeans can contain it, but when a Brit flies in to France from Singapore and passes the virus on to at least 4 others in the same chalet in which they were staying, it begs the question, how many others has he contaminated along the way?

To put things into perspective 13,000 are estimated to have died from flu in the UK in 2008-09 and only 214 from Swine Flu

What has the Swine flu got to do with the new coronavirus which has already killed more than 800 people in little over 1 month and will probably surpass even your estimated annual flu deaths! I don't understand what "things" you're trying to put into perspective.

Swine Flu killed 575,400 people worldwide including 12,369 in the US and 214 in the UK. There's nearly 1 million people a year die in the UK SO THE CHANCE OF DIEING FROM IT I was an increase of 0.0002%.  I don't recall the Vancouver WO ever being under threat.  2008/09, the year before Swine Flu, was a very very bad year for flu in the UK killing 13,000 people in the UK.  Personally I wasn't even aware.  Coronovirus killing 800 people so far is nothing.  It's an overblown drama in the public consciousness, which is good in so far as stopping the spread of it, but ridiculous in the ensuing panic it causes many people.  The worst case scenario is I'm at least 1,000 times, probably over 1,000,000 times more likely to die from someat else, so a little perspective isn't a bad thing.  I still reckon the number of deaths in the UK will be under 10.

The difference is that it is a new virus that is not understood.
Humans have a huge fear of the unknown.

You're right Angoose and on a personal note I live in Thailand and I just don't trust the powers that be in this part of the world. Our Health Minister, who was berating Europeans arriving in BANGKOK a couple of days ago, for not wearing masks is an engineer and knows nothing about medicine. He suggested that the Europeans should be deported. If the virus takes hold here and I reckon it will, the Thais wont be able to contain it.

Unfortunately the virus is becoming more difficult to contain and even Cheltenham is now in doubt. Hopefully, with less than 2 weeks to go they might just get away with it. I still don't hold out much hope for the Olympics though.

Sure has casemoney, I had to pick up a blokes widow from a cruise ship in Villefranche when I had my minivan company a few years back, but as usual your comment has no relevance to the conversation!

This will disappear from the news soon enough make no mistake, for me its pretty much served its purpose in crashing the stock market enough to create a ripple, and that's all it was ever being used for.

Its almost over

not sure how the irish government can maintain a position of banning a couple of taxis full of Italian fans from coming to Dublin yet allowing tens of thousands of their countrymen to troop over to cheltenham

Well SS, as you suggested, I'm back to remind you of your prediction and to reiterate that unfortunately the Games will not go ahead. Canada has already withdrawn and I believe that the decision to cancel is imminent.
