Present in 80% of schools.

Also in a high percentage of hospitals (didn't catch the figure).

The law in this country regarding asbestos isn't as strict as in other European countries.

Where's the EU when you need them?

I know that it is safe unless disturbed but I always wondered if sticking a drawing pin into a wall would cause a problem. (A common occurrence in schools.)

The guest speaker just mentioned this and confirmed it would be an issue.

In school, a few years ago, I enjoyed woodwork, a little more than Algebra and Latin....

Having done some very basic cutting, planing M&T joints etc; the first project was to make an Iron Stand....
(not a stand made of iron, but a stand for an iron)!

This consisted of a rudimentary wooden base, with an iron shaped asbestos top, and a bent flat metal securer.

There was approx fifteen boys in each class of four, so perhaps sixty boys cutting, filing and drilling, and I can't recall how many
weeks this was over, but it was certainly two, at a minimum!

Every surface was covered in asbestos dust, so imagine the amounts inhaled, and not forgetting that the teacher was there
for the entire duration!

It has been mentioned during the hour that there is a higher incidence of mesothelioma in teachers.

My Dad was a builder/property developer all his adult life, mesothelioma killed him aged 59. It was an horrific experience for him and all his family to have gone through. Such an evil wicked disease.Cry

The dangers of asbestos causing death were publicised in 1924.

Yet the stink about it didn't erupt until a television programme in the 1990s about the high numbers of deaths in the industry, vigorously defended by the company in question.
They'd known about it for decades.

A good example of how the authorities treat people like cannon fodder.

Indeed.

I do remember the issue being raised circa 1975.  It must have been a fairly big new story because I was only about nine years old.

Asbestos wasn't banned in new buildings until 1999.

Slippy - I thought of you when I started this thread. A tragedy for your family.
