This is an invalid tax code and you should have received notification
from HMRC that your code was changing and why. |

C means you are in Wales.
As to why it has doubled, dunno. But it could be that the tax computer has over-reacted to your Christmas bonus. That happened to me (not Christmas but a bonus anyway) and the computer decided my regular salary had increased by that much so I was not paying enough tax. Your case may well be different. You can probably just phone up HMRC or its Welsh equivalent if there is one, and ask. That's what I did. |

The W1 at the end means it is an emergency tax code.
https://www.gov.uk/tax-codes/emergency-tax-codes Again this is a sign the computer thinks something drastic has changed. Phone them up, or speak to your HR/payroll department again. HMRC wants everyone to use their online tools but I'm a Luddite. |

I've been trying to google with limited success. It sounds like they're not sure what I earn so they use this code - similar to emergency twx rate??

Yes, and the 482 is not a very big allowance, but the question is why. If something important has changed, chances are you'd know about it -- eg wife died, massive payrise or whatever -- and if you do not know, the chances are it is a mistake.
So talk to them. |
