Farage and his gang were probably my biggest money spinner in the general election thanks to place like Hartlepool. Thanks Nigel, my daughter says her new kitchen is lovely, thanks to you.

.... Farage has a good presence (though full of his own contradictions - and without realising it he has been a saviour for the SNP) though it must be said the presence of the arch-lunatic Anne Widdecombe right beside me kind of takes away any kind of serious regard, it exposes the kind of nutjobs he surrounds himself with. Could he not hide the whack job somewhere?

Looked it up, she is Irish.

Mairead McGuinness (born 13 June 1959) is an Irish politician who has served as the First Vice-President of the European Parliament since 2017. She has been a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from Ireland for the Midlands–North-West constituency since July 2004. She is a member of Fine Gael, part of the European People's Party.[1]

That party Fine Gael is Varadkar's party - I think they are as far removed from Sinn Fein that you could get.

Regardless, she certainly made short work of Farage - cut off his mic, and told him to take his sandcastle flags with himGrin

Surgical precision. Brexit was the target. So he formed the Brexit party to win the EU elections; he did so, May stepped down, the Brexit Party stepped down, and we leave for good on Friday.

And the Remainers? Well, I suppose they can console themselves that they won the argument.

Report HGS • January 30, 2020 2:11 PM GMT
Yes, Nigel Farage's parties have never won a seat in parliament, but this is down to how elections are won. He clearly had, on numbers of votes won nationwide in the 2015 GE, the third biggest party in the UK.

And don't think it wise to call him by his initials on this thread. Happy
Report politicspunter • January 30, 2020 2:50 PM GMT
Of course and I am a supporter of a proportional representation system which would have meant plenty of UKIP representation at Westminster. The current first past the post system is not fit for purpose.
Report screaming from beneaththewaves • January 30, 2020 6:40 PM GMT
Small parties are better served by the current, first-past-the-post system. They may not win any seats, but their votes, spread across many seats, can cost one of the major parties  plenty. Hence the major party has to accommodate the small party's policies in order not to lose votes to them.

Farage is the perfect example of this. UKIP wanted a referendum, and the Conservatives felt they had to offer one, to avoid splitting the right-wing vote.

Under proportional representation Cameron would have been able to carry on in coalition with the Lib Dems (who would also have done well under proportional representation) and ignored UKIP.
Report politicspunter • January 30, 2020 6:59 PM GMT
In the 2015 General election the tories gained 36.8% of the vote, the LibDems 7.9% so even in a coalition, under a PR system, they wouldn't have had a majority.

They still would have formed the government, if they wanted.

Cons 36.8% + LibDems 7.9% = 44.7%
Labour 30.4% + SNP 4.7% = 35.1%

UKIP's 12.6% would have become irrelevant, unless they fancied voting with Labour and the ScotNats.

In fact, if you really want evidence of first-past-the-post favouring the tiny, nutcase parties, the ScotNats are the best example. 4.7% of the votes, but 8.6% of the MPs.

I believe the British electorate do know how to vote in elections eg Brexit Party for MEPs (Brussels), and Tories (GE) to deliver Brexit.

I also believe Mr Juncker and Mr Tusk helped to deliver Brexit (both authoritarian and arrogant but un-elected by EU citizens) with their penchant for more of the same, and reluctance to reform.

I also think Farage was brilliant in his last speech in the European Debate at Brussels earlier in the week.

When we (UK Plc) are more successful and progressive than The EU more fragmentation could only follow esp from the German and French citizens. How much longer can the citizens of these two countries continually supporting the pariah economies and funding of The EU? 5 years perhaps at the most.

How could they form a government without a majority? They would have been in the same boat as Boris found himself pre general election, the biggest "party" but couldn't pass any laws in Westminster.

The EU will never admit Turkey as a member despite their qualification on my fronts (apart from human rights) because Turkey will never allow any EU leader from minnow EU member state and economy to tell them what to do. Also, The EU will never accept any new member not conducive to their political strategy going forward ie their expansionism policy.
