Not the first fella to be shafted by Norton
Report ericster • January 20, 2020 5:00 PM GMT
By preventing idiots like me from renewing they're shafting themselves though aren't they?
Report unitedbiscuits • January 20, 2020 10:06 PM GMT
Norton are the pits.

Try Avast free antivirus. It’s good and quick.

rony, I am rubbish with this stuff, it's as much as I can manage, just to switch on and log-in. I've got five days left I think, shall probably try again before it expires but if/when it DOES expire. Well, for now, that will be that. To think, I can remember a time when computer-docs were two a penny. And now, where did they all go?

some say antiviruses are a scam, others say they are a total necessity. i have basically never used an anti virus and only got a virus once and i think that came from torrent downloading which i was doing on an old laptop but don't touch any more. that is from 10+ years of daily internet usage, i go on any site i want. i'm not dumb and i know what a phishing scam is so i don't open every email link i get. i check documents before downloading, i use a free thing to do that.  as long as  you don't go on any dodgy websites and don't enter any phishing email scams then touch wood you should be alright with just windows firewall and defender turned on. this might be horrendous advice but no anti virus has generally worked for me. i think norton is a bit of a scam tbh but someone will come and tell you that anti virus software is completely necessary. hey ho i suppose it's like insurance for your car, a legal requirement but some people still get away with never having it. take your choice. uninstall and download a free thing and save yourself however much it costs per year

I mentioned this on the windows 7 thread too. I haven't used an original windows installation in years and never used an anti virus. I open all the filth on the internet and yet I have never had to deal with a virus. I won't even touch a free anti virus let alone use a paid one. It's a scam.

the more i think about it the more i think you're right, DT.

Like it DT. Suspect we can all do without it online!!

Windows 10 has got its own anti-virus.
Report Dr Crippen • January 21, 2020 7:36 PM GMT
I installed Norton many years ago, it came free with a new computer.
It buggered the lot up and I had to re format.

I told a broadband engineer about it, and he said yes the same thing happened to him when he used it.

There's plenty of these programmes about, but I agree with detraveller they're a scam.

They always slow your machine right down anyway.

If you haven't got a anti-virus programme installed, then you are never going to know if you have got a virus HTH. YTF.

I envy you guys I really do.
Report ericster • January 22, 2020 9:57 AM GMT
And yes, my gear really is slow, when I watch footie on the little bf screen, oh dear, stops and starts.
I managed to get a phone number earlier so I shall attempt to renew by phone.
Failing that, there's a local fixer who also hates norton. I let him sort my me out with his preferred AV and see how it goes.
Tell you what, I wish I could dump all of this and do it with mobile phone, but I'm just too thick for that stuff.

Avast admits tracking users and selling their data

https://www.cnet.com/news/antivirus-firm-avast-is-reportedly-selling-users-web-browsing-data/

If you're not the customer, you're the product.

That's the internet.

What drove me away Norton ( a long time ago) was the pause after every click.
Report dave1357 • January 29, 2020 1:45 PM GMT
The paid ones aren't worth it, the free ones suspect at least with microsoft security essentials you are the customer.
Report ericster • January 30, 2020 4:51 PM GMT
Avast got a bad press today in the Mail for "passing on personal data" but as u.b. says, "that's the internet".
