Try looking up EU rules around freedom of movement - which other countries apply and we don't. Besides most of our immigration is non-EU which is completely in our control.  We are without doubt the thickest nation in the EU  (mind you just need to see us on holidays to verify that).

@Wallflower is right about non-EU immigration.

Ironically any racists who stupidly voted Leave will have reduced the number of White Christian immigrants and increased the number of Black, Asian and Muslim immigrants. Lesson to thick racists: be careful what you wish for.

Freedom of Movement is not the same as immigration. We get that. In fact, that is the point. People who voted Leave because they mixed them up will be disappointed.

As it stands, the UK does not even bother checking the people at its border, even though it is supposed to. If you ever end up leaving the EU, it will still be the same. Just making up a law doesn't make a difference, you have to implement it.

When you tell the rest of the EU that they can't come to UK as easily as before, they'll just hitch a ride with the non-EU lads. Then they'll add to the black economy. Ramruma is right that by denying the rest of EU the freedom of movement, you are basically increasing the percentage of the really unwanted immigrants.

That doesn't mean you should let the rest of EU in too. If you really are sick of immigrants, maybe tell the UKIB and border patrol to do their jobs? With Brexit, you're just switching the legal immigrants to illegal ones.

The relevant question is "why do they want to come to the UK" Many EU countries are also struggling to prevent non EU inward migration but they seem to find it easy to encourage them to move on to the UK. If it is so easy to get into UK why do people risk their lives in containers and small boats?

Interestingly ........   as some may know I spend a bit of time over in Ireland  about 4-5 days a month (yes, Brexit-related, primarily).

Friendly over there with a guy whose brother is in the Irish Diplomatic Service met one night and he had loads of great stories - one where some thick Irish politician hassled him to embarrass Blair and a British delegation - but back-fired badly with Blair being a cool as a cucumber - and turning the whole thing around completely against the guy - but that's for another time.

On this subject he told me there was an Irish cabinet meeting at the last EU enlargement - all EU countries were asked would you allow freedom of movement obviosuly with rules; each country had a choice for about 10 years or so I think.  Only UK (as he said, "always looking for cheap labour", and never apply any rules!!) and Sweden I think agreed, all the others didn't initially. Ireland was undecided.

At the Irish cabinet meeting the following questions were actually asked/discussed "they are predominately white, aren't they?"  "they are christians, some orthodox, but sh1tloads of Catholics, the churches will be pleased they're empty half the time", "we'll push for getting a reduction on the non-European immigration quota, never know". They then agreed to allow free movement - as he said, "we're not adverse to a bit of cheap labour either". He said Ireland then made a big deal of being "good Europeans" and of being an opening and welcoming country - but the truth behind the scenes - if we significant immigration then some are more welcome than others!!

When you walk around Dublin it is diverse - significant numbers of Eastern Europeans - even in our office, but seem to have integrated very well there. There are many Africans and Asians but not in same proportion as here - I have wondered are the Irish "at it" - being publicly very open but in reality heavily slanted to white immigration.

Not saying its true - but you would wonder sometimes. I do accept they weren't a colonial power (being a colony) - but even so the difference to UK is quite obvious.

Blair should have called a referendum in 2001...the EU opened itself up to include East European countries

The anti-democratic, illiberal establishment of recent years has been well & truly removed. Brexit, today, has finally cleared both parliaments without amendments. After over 3 years of division, dithering & delaying we are leaving. Our voice is finally being listened to. 9 days.

It is not governments that make migrants feel welcome or unwelcome it is society.
