One of the greats, admired by his peers has died of brain cancer on 7th January aged 67, just been released. Up there with Baker, Bonham, Copeland and the likes.
I was a Rush fanatic since about 1977. I was playing my favourite album A Farewell To Kings in the car this week.
In the 1970's world of rock music where the guitar was king , I can think of no band whose sound was as defined by the drummer as much as the axeman as Rush and Mr Peart was.
He was simply the best rock drummer there was imo .......I recall him talking about his admiration for the incredible Buddy Rich.
RIP Mr Peart ,a part of my teenage years that is still with me today.

I was more an 80's Rush guy Sixtosix, probably because of my age, Permanent waves thru to Power Windows. The music of my youth.
Nice piece on BBC news this morning, had a lot of tragedies in later years, daughter killed in car crash/wife died a year later, leaves a young daughter of 10 behind.
Apologies to S Copeland, very much still banging the skins!

Deplasterer , I preferred the guitar based 70's stuff than the keyboard dominated 80's. The first album up to Spirit Of Radio and Tom Sawyer is my Rush.

Awesome talent - had pleasure of seeing Buddy Rich in Eastbourne in late 70's and saw Rush in Brighton 1981 (Moving Pictures Tour) - Two greatest drummer/percussionists have ever seen. Just love the live version of Xanadu. He was one of my true heroes These endings remind one of ones own mortality when these guys we've grown up with pop their clogs eg Bowie, Lemmie, Jon Lord, Keith Emmerson etc. RIP

Can anybody suggest some modern great British drummers that are worth checking out? Can't think of anyone who is up with say Bonham,Moon,Baker, Powell and Paice. I'm sure they must be out there. Any suggestions?

I stand by what I say. Saw Rush 3 times, and loads of other bands back in late 70's and 80's and even a Neil Peart solo did nothing for me, however I remember being right at the front at the Southampton Gaumont, Permanent Waves Tour and wondering who to watch, Lifeson or Peart @ 4.24, arguably the best bit of the whole song. Ladies and gentlemen, The Professor on the drumsticks...........

"The Garden" , last lyrics he wrote on the last Rush album and final song on Clockwork Angels:

Neil Peart:
"I have now arrived at that point in my own story. There is a metaphorical garden in the acts and attitudes of a person's life, and the treasures of that garden are love and respect. I have come to realize that the gathering of love and respect - from others and for myself - has been the real quest of my life."
