Because they want to de-escalate the situation. It is also probably true but that is not why they are saying it.

Why would any government whose citizens have been murdered want to de-escalate the situation, won't their relatives want answers to what happened, why do you think it is probably true that it was an accident and why are they clearing the site of the crash with JCBs before any foreign investigators can look at it?

Why would Iran want to kill so many of its own citizens?  Most of the "Canadians" on board were dual Iranian-Canadian passport holders.

The point being if they wanted war they'd accuse them of shooting it down intentionally, the fact they haven't and are actually defending Iran just about sums this whole mess up

Of course they don't want war (either side).  For all Trump is a big-mouthed buffoon, the people behind him are not completely stupid.  Killing the general (who did pose a threat to US forces in the region) was a marker.  The rocket attack was a retaliatory show of force, nothing more.  The 737 shootdown could easily be explained by panicked personnel fearing a reprisal attack by America.

But we now know they are playing games

Yes, the rocket attack was a face saver for domestic consumption. A warning was given so there were no casualties. A mirror image of the US rocket attack in Syria over the chemical weapons incident.

I could understand if they claimed the Yanks did it, but they haven't.

When do the rest of the sheep twig its all a game? and if they do when do they go out and demand answers? why are 150 people being slaughtered on a plane attack and nothing is done about it?

The Iranians do not have the best tech available. They've been hit by sanctions for decades. Their air defences are 30 years old at least.

A better question is why commercial airliners were still taking off in the middle of this small battle.

If they just got rid of the mullahs Iran could go forward and prosper.

They tried to bulldoze the plane wreck but it was soon clear that the evidence was too strong to deny so they put their hands up and admitted it was a missile launch that mistook an airliner for an American warplane. The Iranians have not had a good week.
