I thought this video might stimulate an interesting debate on Chit Chat.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rbzJTTDO9f4

My own take on this sorry affair is that the suspicions are clearly justified... some students cheated for sure. That said, Professor Quinn’s proposed offer of leniency for those who confess is an obvious bluff. I don’t care if he is the world’s greatest statistician and the report is ninety-nine percent accurate, in a country as litigious as America nobody is getting expelled here were they to keep shtum.

Your own thoughts on the matter would be most welcome.

I had to chuckle at Professor Quinn declaring only a letter from God could excuse one’s presence at the exam retake. Any innocent student would be justifiably pissed at such an unfair ultimatum. I would be tempted to pen a short note along the lines of:

Dear Professor.

With past grades bearing testament to his unimpeachable moral rectitude, I regret to inform you that Mr Pokermonster will not be attending your hastily contrived re-examination. Any further harassment of my client by your department and I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger.

Yours divinely,

God.

At first glance, it certainly looks like some folks know the questions in advance.

Don't think Prof Quinn is a statistician, otherwise he wouldn't be using two histograms with differing intervals to fit and "prove" his theory. It opens up suggestions of backfitting for the "dirty exam" histogram

Who was the pupil who kept coughing?
Charles Ingram?

Some very good comments under that video Laugh
He's been teaching for 31 years and he uses questions from a test bank. Don't know why professors do that.
The threats are obviously a bluff. There's no way you can prove that a particular student cheated. The expulsion part is clearly nonsense. You aren't explaining shet to anyone's parents.

The best part for me was when he says everyone's gonna retake the test and theres that one girl who asks 'even those who didn't cheat?'. If he was only going to redo the test for the cheaters no one's gonna show up innit?

I see that using the test banks might be a university requirement to ensure consistency.

Hard to believe his claim that it’s the first time he’s encountered students cheating in 21 years. My missus is a teacher and she’s seen cheating loads of times.

Also, without condoning the cheating, what did he expect lazily getting the questions from a test bank? He should have set the questions himself in the first place - something he eventually did in a few days anyway.

It’s common practice for rich students to pay somebody else for course work these days. Sad

Some commenters on youtube have mentioned that this is a requirement in some universities. Probably so that the test results are comparable to past years and other universities. The prof. mentioned publishers being aware of this, which means if their test bank, supposed to be a document for the profs, is in the hands of the students, possibly multiple universities are affected?

I work on Upwork and often see kids posting their math assignments offering 20 bucks to anyone who'd solve it for them.

Is it an old video clip? I wonder what the outcome was?

If I was one of the innocent kids who had done well I’d probably kick up a fuss. It’s all very well demanding they turn up for another test in a few weeks time, but that means cramming again and they might have earmarked that time to revise another course subject.

I sympathise with the teacher but he could, and should, have handled it better IMO.

200 students came forward and admitted 'cheating'. They claimed its not their fault the professor used a test manual for the exam that is publicly available. Rightly so.

Also the retest had a normal distribution Laugh So what we learn is that the 'external force' that resulted in the bimodal distribution was the genius himself LaughLaughLaugh

200 Shocked
Report detraveller January 7, 2020 10:56 PM GMT
Yes. One-third, like he claimed.

Think the students all sat down and said he only expects one-third to show up so lets only send 200 confessions in. The total test takers were 600.
Report Torquemada January 7, 2020 11:01 PM GMT
I’m surprised so many confessed. Those empty threats about a deadline were laughable. You would have thought those who dared to cheat would also have no problem calling his bluff.
