Mrs H needs new phone.  It will be an iPhone 7 and on O2 network.  (This is cast in stone!).  Say 1GB per month.

Option A - Tesco (O2 network) £17.49 * 36 = £629

Option B - O2 £26 * 36 = £963

Plan X.  Take out contract with O2, then using their O2 Refresh, pay off the device (£279) then
move to Tesco for £7.50 pcm Sim Only (2GB)

Total cost over 3 years £549.

Have checked with O2....who seem happy with my idea.

Dont get involved with 3 year contracts.
Report Jack Hacksaw January 4, 2020 1:30 PM GMT
She did, angel, but I noticed that it stopped once you sent a photo of your old chap. Mischief

Yes, Ibra..  I reckon prices will continue to fall.  The  £7.50 is a 12 month contract.

Needs to be O2, JJ.  (That's nearly J2O Laugh)

If you are only using 1/2 GB a month why do you need an IPHONE ?
Report Akak January 4, 2020 2:44 PM GMT
Affordable Mobiles 24 month contract @ £24 per month. Free calls and texts plus 10 gb Data. Phones are dispatched from Data Select ( which is Peter Jones Dragons Den company). Highly recommend this company. I received my order in two days.

Have you checked how much longer the iPhone 7 will receive updates for?
Report GRANTCKING January 4, 2020 5:42 PM GMT
It's a very old phone now
Report Jack Hacksaw January 4, 2020 9:57 PM GMT
Yes, it’s 3 years old.  It is to replace an iPhone 4 which is 9 or 10 years old.  I don’t think you would
Ever know in advance how long a product would be supported for, but I take your point.

Surely data usage is only one aspect of a mobile phone, casemoney.  If you can get Wi-fi why use data?

Akak - that seems a good deal if you need the data.

have you considered buying a 2nd hand or refurb model off ebay and then just sticking a pay as you go giff gaff sim in it, giff gaff uses the o2 network
Report GRANTCKING January 4, 2020 10:16 PM GMT
you can get brand new ones even for around £245 then a giffgaff sim for £8 a month which includes unlimited calls, texts and 2GB of data
Report Jack Hacksaw January 4, 2020 11:58 PM GMT
Wouldn’t get a refurbished one after previous experience.

Where can I buy a new one from a reputable source for that price?
Report GRANTCKING January 5, 2020 2:34 AM GMT

Can't take the risk with the Mrs's phone.  Isn't worth the earache.

There is a CEX shop near me that sells loads of secondhand phones and I have just looked at their online website and they have a Iphone 7 for £160 with a 2 year guarantee.  Then you can get a sim only payg or 12 month contract from about £7.  My phone is a 12 month contract with Virgin with 1 GB data, unlimited texts and 1500 minutes.  The data is a lifetime triple data and rollover, so every month I have at least 3GB data and usually 4GB. The price is £7.00 a month.  Why does it have to be O2?
Report GRANTCKING January 5, 2020 11:10 PM GMT
im guessing its to do with where he lives, o2 probs offers the best reception

Report Jack Hacksaw January 6, 2020 10:13 AM GMT
Correct grant.  O2 does seem to be more expensive than some.  My own phone is SIM only with O2 and was £11.72 for 2GB - I had taken my eye off the ball price wise....so I phoned up O2 and asked for PAC to move to Tesco's £7.50 and they agreed to reduce mine to £8.

Thanks everyone for your comments.
