Disgraceful and shocking!!!
Report detraveller January 2, 2020 11:44 AM GMT
Have to agree that it was disrespectful, considering the amount of money spent, which could easily have been given to the firefighters, 90% of whom I read are unpaid volunteers(hard to believe).

But you also have to think that as bad as it looks, the aussies didn't complain. They could have refused to go to the fireworks, could have sat there in protest the next day, could have demanded the PM to answer etc. etc. None of that happened. Tweets and facebook posts don't count in real life.
Report The_KAMIKAZEE_DRINKING_MACHINE January 2, 2020 12:59 PM GMT
How could they cancel the fireworks? It's on an 18 month cycle. Those fireworks have already been bought and paid for. They're well into planning next year's fireworks.

Volunteer firefighters are proud to be volunteers. It's not a job. It's all about helping people. They're proud of that.

The Sydney NYE fireworks is an event that attracts thousands of tourists around the world and brings in millions of dollars. On the same night there was a cricket match that thousands of people went to. No one said that was frivolous and disrespectful. I heard Rural Fire Service volunteers on the radio say it was ridiculous to cancel the fireworks.

I've been alive 54 years and there's been massive bushfires every single Summer I've been alive. Captain Cook noted as he was sailing along the coast the incredible number of fires.

In terms of lives lost and property destroyed the bushfires this year don't rank anywhere near the worst in history. In 1851 a bushfire aided by temperatures of 47C 117F destroyed 12 million acres. They don't like mentioning it was 47C in 1851 these days.In 2009 173 people died in the Black Saturday fires.Fires made worse from local councils and National Parks dominated by Green ideology which meant a ban on hazard reduction burns.

The fires this year are obviously exacerbated by the drought but the intensity of the burn lays squarely at the feet of green/environmental/conservationist lunatics that don't even allow a camper to pick up a dead stick laying on the ground to make a camp fire. They locked the gates to national parks so the tracks are unused. So if there's a fire no truck can get down there. It's an absolute disgrace.

Another thing rarely mentioned is that about 50% of bushfires are deliberately lit. By Arsonists. I'm not sure how accurate that % is but I think it must be close.

I remember back in about 1994 or 1995 there was some terrible bushfires in NSW and even in Sydney. I was driving along James Ruse Drive near Parramatta just near Rosehill Racecourse. Anyway a Copper directed me to stop. So I did. I sat there and watched over a hundred Rural Fire Service trucks drive past with the crews sitting in the back and the name of their station on the side coming from anywhere from NSW rural towns to also Victoria and Queensland and South Australia. It was very moving. Seeing all these men from across Australia come to help.

What's changed in my view is the dissemination of weather affected events. Twenty years ago (or longer) this stuff used to happen but virtually nobody new about it outside locals. Now virtually everyone in the world can see these events captured and broadcast instantaneously. This goes for all 'alarmist' news, not just weather events of course. Like the world able to see the London Bridge terrorist being eliminated just after it happened.

Surely the problem of climate change (if it is man made) will eventually go away.

As the temperatures rise we need less fuel for heating. So emissions will start to drop.
Isn't that what the hand-wringers want - for us to use less fuel?

Okay, I'm using less fuel now.
Also eating hardly any meat, and walk most places into the bargain. That reminds me I've got to get some petrol tomorrow.

Add it all together, and most of us are model citizens without even trying!

It’s noticeable how often virtue signalling consists of saying you hate things. It is camouflage. The emphasis on hate distracts from the fact you are really saying how good you are. If you were frank and said: ‘I care about the environment more than most people do’ or ‘I care about the poor more than others’, your vanity and self-aggrandisement would be obvious. Anger and outrage disguise your boastfulness.

Because lefties have taking the phrase 'climate change' to mean it's something that humans can significantly influence. I define climate change to be that over centuries the type of weather and average temperatures have changed over time, and will continue to do so. I sense you may feel it's something that humans can prevent or significantly influence (although I could be incorrect in that train of thought).
Report Charlie January 2, 2020 7:46 PM GMT
So you're using the term lefties in a derogatory way (perhaps you think I'm a leftie?). Climate change isn't a political stance it's a scientific fact. You are correct in saying it's something that humans have made and can, possibly, correct.
Report Cider January 2, 2020 7:54 PM GMT
It used to be 'global warming' when I was growing up (a long time ago!). Yes I feel lefties have redefined the innocent term 'climate change' like calling a second referendum a 'peoples' vote'. As they like the term climate change denier ;)
Like I said, your interpretation of climate change (that humans can influence it) can be debated, but won't be by me here, lol. I don't dispute that over many many years the climate has changed.

All they've done is weaponized the term 'climate change' and made it an emotive term in an attempt to heighten the fear factor among the general public. They inject a sense of urgency by saying things like, "We only have 10 years left to do something about climate change."

Catastrophic weather events have always happened throughout history, and I would say it only affects us more these days because of 1) population growth has put more people in the firing line when they happen. 2) Near instant world wide communication means we hear about them more often when they do occur, especially as it suits a certain political agenda.

Then there's the possibility of weather manipulation to further the same agenda.

GMAD - very good post at 10.32.

The BBC are running a piece today on Zambia. It faces mass food shortages they say, because of 'Climate Change'.

The rainy season was indeed later to arrive. But in Africa the problem they're slow to address is 'water harvesting'. A miniscule amount that falls is ever collected.

So they're far too dependant on rainfall because they don't save and store it. It's one of the main reasons for starvation in Africa.

They then compound the problem by felling millions of trees to make charcoal to sell. That turns countries into deserts.
Report The_KAMIKAZEE_DRINKING_MACHINE January 3, 2020 12:54 PM GMT
I wouldn't trust the ABC or the BOM as far as I could throw them. Been caught fudging so often it's pathetic.

Again I repeat. These are not the worst bushfires ever. Far from it. It's not the hottest summer ever. I was wearing track pants a couple of weeks ago ffs. It's not the worst drought ever. The Federation drought was worse. I'm tired of these dickheads leaping on everything to push their agenda. Does the ABC ever mention the modern day phenomenon of modern day bushfires often started by lunatic arsonists? Do they ever mention the Greens dominated local councils and National Parks that prevent hazard reduction burns in winter because they want to 'protect' the environment? No. It doesn't suit their agenda which is all about blaming everything in the world on climate change. The people who live in these fire ravaged regions are white hot with anger about all this. The massive reduction in hazard reduction burns these last 20 years are the major reason these fires are so intense. Can you imagine going camping in the bush in Australia - an island so huge that 95% of it is basically unpopulated and inner city Greenies have made it illegal to gather up dead sticks off the ground to make a campfire. And now those same inner city Greenies that infest the ABC take great delight in trotting out their climate change propoganda.
Report The_KAMIKAZEE_DRINKING_MACHINE January 3, 2020 1:00 PM GMT
Injera - it's the same here. The bloke who built the Harbour Bridge -Bradfield- had a plan to harvest the massive rainfalls in northern Queensland that just go out to sea and redirect them into river systems that would provide more than enough water for Eastern Australia forever. That was in the 1930s. No politician has ever done anything about it.
