I usually get given an expensive bottle of whiskey in my Christmas presents, but I prefer the cheap Highland Earl sold at Aldi.
Amazing that when you compare the prices.

Perhaps I lack taste.

After reading the bullshine on the box, you think this is going to be good. Pour a glass and what a let down.
I don't think I've ever tasted an expensive whisky I'd go out and buy.

I bought my first ever bottle recently, Monkey Shoulder. I now realise I like speysides rather than Highlands. I haven't tried many single malts but my Bother's fav is ghastly to my taste, reminds me of hospitals.

sometimes the cheap ones are decent if you like their taste. others you may detest, only one way to find out !!!

some folk like a strong taste so paying a fortune for a mature mellow spirit is total waste of money.

you pays yer monets and you takes yer pick.

The worst one I had was some smoked rubbish.

Best used to start a fire out of a pile of tree cuttings in the garden.

This thread just reminded me - a filly I owned won a dreadful seller at Wolverhampton in 2002, and as a prize I got given a miniature bottle of Dalvey Rare Highland Silver Malt along with a nice silver hip flask as a prize by the racecourse. I've never got round to actually opening the bottle.

Does anyone know whether it's likely still to be good enough to share with someone? Or should I just knock it back myself, on the basis of it being less embarrassing if it's just me who ends up with my head over the toilet bowl a few hours later?
