HUMBUG!
I hate this time of year. I don't  begrudge others their little piece of merriment but I really can't be bothered with all that "who sends/gives who what". It's all such a worthless pointless palaver. I have relatives who worry months before-hand, will go into debt and start the year broke, why? What are they trying to prove? Keeping up appearances? I refuse to accept gifts from what few relatives that I have because I feel bad about taking their hard earned from them. Why can't they see that. Oh they'll huff and they'll puff but the bottom line will be one less gift to find and no matter how good their intentions, most of it's tat anyway. I'm sorry but it IS. If you are in good health, have a full stomach and a roof over your, what else does anybody really need? Just be thankful for that eh?

Have a good  one y'all. Humph!

some wise words in there eric, some folk enjoy buying presents too.

used to be a celebration that we were half way through winter and days were getting
longer, and warmer ...or soon would be.... remember to have a bit of a feast to top up before
the snow comes !

Agree with you eric, I live alone so to me its just another day. I have friends and get invited round but I don't want to go.

Like you don't begrudge anyone partying but its a bit over the top and doing what you think you should rather than doing what you want.

Growing up we always had family get togethers but I don't have any immediate family so happy on my own. Not sure why people get upset if I refuse their invite, after all its an invite and not compulsory.

The worst thing is being called miserable by other people who love it.  Well, actually I don't really care.
If you're not a child and don't have children, then Christmas is just boring.  And if on top of that you're self employed and don't have work parties or time off to look forward to, then it's just another day when not much goes on.  Thank god the darts/footie/racing is on this time of year.

Guys, I've always been happy enough to have time off work so I shouldn't really complain too much.
It's tough for those with big families, not forgetting those living on the streets in shop doorways.
"Being called miserable", whatever. I can live with that.
As for boring, I don't bet very often nowadays and the football coupons for the next couple days have nothing me, that's a pain but there you go.

Danno, the people that matter, I mean REALLY matter, wouldn't do that imo. Easy for me to say, I don't know anybody.

I haven't been to a pub in I don't know how many years. I get myself a few litres of cheap gutrot cider from my local Costcutters at the weekend and that does me. Just an old grouch nowadays, I don't go out much. People/society, it's not a pretty sight imo.

That's a shame ericster you always come across as a nice friendly helpful person on here, social interaction is usually a good thing.

I hope you have an enjoyable Christmas.

We need some sport and something to bet on Christmas Day

Going without a bet for one day is too long for some of us

They used to play football on Christmas Day back in the day, time to reintroduce it

Only one football match, greyhound meeting or horse racing meeting will do...just something to bet on and /or watch

Some of us have no family, just the cat,

Christmas day Discriminates against those who have no family, or those of other religions

Since we say we say don't like discrimination in our society, then we must allow sports and betting on Christmas day

I agree with OP, I always thought that, since it's a religious holiday, only people who are actually religious should be able to celebrate. Maybe if you go to church >30 times a year you can give/receive presents.

I don't know how to make a cooked dinner so that's the best part for me, as well as time off work.

Well, I must agree with much of this.  Christmas sure ain't what it was when I was a nipper.

For those of you in the mood, there's a service from St John's Kirk in Perth coming on BBC1 Scotland in just a few minutes time.

BBC SCOTLAND

Sally Magnusson introduces carols and readings from St John's Kirk, Perth. The congregation includes singers from all over Perthshire. The traditional Biblical accounts of the birth of Jesus, along with modern meditations, are read by 13 pupils from nine Perth primary and senior schools. The organist is Howard Duthie, and the minister is the Rev John Murdoch

I would venture to suggest, respectfully of course, that it's probably the non the least religious of humanity who turn it into a circus. I doubt that the truly religious have a need to shout about it. They just do what they do among their own kind.

I to appreciate the time off work, but I'm not really bothered about the roast turkey gig nowadays. The wife will be cooking a crown later but I won't partake of  an actual xmas-dinner. We/she will have a couple of relatives over for dinner, I shall retire to my bedroom until they've gone and then I shall pick at the leftovers. At other times of the year I cook my own meals, nothing to rave about, I eat well enough.

Don't begrudge other's their voodoo though it might be different to yours. It's all part of life's rich tapestry.
Enjoy the day.

I won't disagree that.
Fair play Foinavon.
