then the answer is still the chicken then, since the egg laid was the egg of a different bird and not a chickens egg

Asking what came first the chicken or the egg is not the same as asking what came first the chicken or the chicken's egg.

A near chicken like bird laid an egg - the egg developed into a chicken - the chicken laid a chicken's egg.
