It's not a case of IF your hard-drive fails... It's a case of WHEN it fails... So I'm told. Back it up and be prepared. Especially if your equipment's over 5 or 6 years old. imo.

I know little about computers, but my laptop with Windows 7 suddenly began to dawdle at the start just last week which was very unusual as I only use it for here and horses - nothing else. I also delete browsing history and cache every day.

I  think it could have something to do with no more update available for Windows 7.

Take it to a local computer tech shop. If you check online I'm sure you'll find one. Leave it to the experts.

They can tell you if it's gone, save any info on it hopefully, or fix/tell you to buy a new one.

If you car goes wrong you take it to the garage......

Nothing to do with UPDATES for Windows7 - and they do not end until next month, too.

Updates do not cause problems - They either load seamlessly - as mine still do, 1 every day, around 3  one day once a month - or they fail to load, and just get sent again.

I would not worry too much about Support for Windows7 ending next month, either - and especially in your case, as like myself, you use your machine almost exclusively for Betfair, and presumably a Form site, along with some general internet surfing.

As long as you only visit mainstrean sites, you are unlikely to get something nefarious dropped onto your computer... and, IF something massive happened - Microsoft will probably make an emergency patch available.
Imagine the negative PR if Microsoft left MILLIONS of world-wide Windows7 users 'high and dry'

Eventually everybody will move on, as their computers/Laptops become outdated, Processor-wise, etc   - But certainly not everybody next month, or any time soon.

Presumably you have the in-built Microsoft Security Essentials with your Windows7 - and that is the most efficient Anti-Virus/Real-time screening tool that I have ever used.

Laptops are renowned for over-heating, which will then slow them down - How old is your Laptop - is it, therefore full of fluff? .... and by that - I don't mean "Gay porn."  Happy

'onlooker', thanks for the info.

My Samsung laptop is over 6 years old: I5 chip with Windows 7 Home Premium; 8GB enhanced. Just recently I noticed it was slow booting up. I'd go on 'cricfree' for horse racing for pics, and every now and again when I clicked 'x' for a fuller screen I'd get half-naked females. But, I always clear browsing history, cache and initiate a full scan every evening before bed.

I must admit I cling-filmed the keyboard to prevent the keys from fading. Also, I'd to duck-tape both top corners of the back panel (plastic) as it has developed a big crack on either side (but not covering air vents).

I do have two other laptops: a Lenovo 17" Windows 8 HD with I5 chip - super good - use as a spare for horse racing; an Acer 15" with I5 chip but Windows 10 which I detest - only use it for playing games (promotions) for free spins by some bookies (unable with Windows 7).

Apart from the Acer the other two have Windows Defender and Spybot recommended by my bank.

For anyone wondering about heat issues from blocked intakes to the laptop fan, there is another nice little free program from the maker of Ccleaner called Speccy https://www.ccleaner.com/speccy

It will read any system temperatures that are available.

I can load an HD vid in full screen and watch my GPU temp shoot up until the fan kicks in and then see it settle down again.
