If there was a referendum in England to become independent from Scotland (KEEP or BREAK the union), how would you vote?

I would vote to KEEP the union.

What about Wales and Northern Ireland?
Report Nebs December 15, 2019 12:35 AM GMT
And lets not forget that N Ireland needs to be split in two for the purposes of a vote like this.

P.S. My vote is to keep the union, purely on selfish grounds that I don't want to mess about with border control if I ever go to the Ayr Gold Cup.

I didn’t include Wales and Northern Ireland because this question was in response to something I was chatting about on the SNP thread to which I wanted to ask a wider audience.

One day in primary school we learned proverbs.  'Empty vessels make the most sound' is one I particularly remember.  It's true in the literal, physical sense and also true in the metaphorical sense.  The noisy left-wing remainers don't represent England and the SNP don't represent Scotland.  Keep the Union.

The Union is finished the SNP rule in Scotland , Bullingdon has no mandate in Scotland soon they will be free from the tories

Sinn Fein lost 7.5% of their vote anxious, the biggest loss by any party in NI.
Scotland no further forward than they were in 2014.
So wrong on both counts.

My vote is get rid of the union.
Both NI and Scotland voted overwhelmly to stay in the EU,they shouldn't be dragged out against their wishes, the union is a failure in that regard.

If Scotland (especially) wanted to leave the union I wouldn't mind as long as it was a proper leave and not a 'pick and mix' leave.

- Adopt the Euro (and deal with the many Scots who hold mortgages in GBP) £ ?
- Pay their share of national debt
- Have their own TV channels and TV programmes (or pay for BBC ones)
- Pay for overseas embassies
- Establish their own central bank

Also answer:

What will happen at the Scottish / UK border especially with regards to tariffs ?
SCO’s population is about 5.75m - what will you do if 10-15% of them (the most productive) emigrate to ENG?
Who gets a passport? What about those living north of the border who don’t want one / won’t have one? What will their immigration status be?
How will electricity supply be managed? Will Scotland still be part of the UK grid?

Then there’s the fact that Scotland would have to adopt the euro and become part of Schengen, both of which are non-negotiables for any new member states. But crucially, Scotland’s annual deficit of 7 per cent of GDP puts it over the 3 per cent threshold that automatically triggers the EU’s ‘excessive deficit procedure’, i.e. the EU would insist on an eye-watering austerity programme as a condition of joining.

I'm sure the SNP have thought all this through and when they get pat the anti-English 'blame the Tories for everything' routine, they'll furnish their voters with answers.

You seem to be confusing the thread with EU membership?

Report Foinavon December 16, 2019 1:33 PM GMT
I believe that as the core member of the union in terms of population and wealth we have no right to cast off other members without their consent. If the Scots wish to leave then it's their decision. The terms of leaving do however concern us and initially I would be in favour of a clean break with a free trade agreement and continued free movement of people. If Scotland then decides to join the EU then they abide by whichever EU/ RUK agreements are in force at the time.
