So why on earth don't we have the option to vote electronically?  That would surely boost the turnout percentage.

And counting votes by hand?  There's got to be a better, quicker and more accurate way to do this.  I remember doing exams in the 1980s where part of the paper was multiple choice.  You had to place a horizontal line in a box which I think was read by some sort of electronic device.

You could test it in a mock election then introduce it on a limited basis in a local or by-election.

The electronic count could be run in parallel with a manual count.

I never hear this being discussed in the media.

You could have it like x factor where you vote out a candidate every week

They do it in some countries and there are potential issues.  But whether voting is manual or electronic, surely we can automate the counting?

Fingerprint or retina scan technology would be good. It might at least hinder Labour’s usual vote r1gging efforts.

One issue that has just occurred to me is that your vote wouldn't be secret.

online voting would be very susceptible to hackers and fraudsters looking to manipulate the vote cause general havoc, would be a target every time.

Then there's the millions who abstain are suddenly finding themselves on casting a vote because a household member has encouraged them to sign up so he/she can vote twice/thrice etc for who They want. Many vulnerable people would easily be taken advantage of,

The website could also crash with millions casting a vote near to the deadline which would be pandemonium, you'd have calls to null and void the vote whilst those who unexpectedly won a seat would be arguing opposite, then you'd have to rearrange the whole thing probably manually with a much lower turnout, not to mention costly exercise.

Yes, dds. A few potential teething problems!  But as an ex-boss of mine would say, "give me solutions, not problems!"

Anyway, we can automate the count, can't we?

You can't really protect against the things I listed, way too much at stake with no fullproof way of preventing such manipulation, also many people like a trip to the village hall, town hall or wherever, tradition and all thatSilly tv would also not like it, less air time waiting for votes to come in.
