I think the licence should be scrapped. However, the furore regarding the over-75s is nonsense. Those who can't afford to pay don't have to. There's no reason why those who can afford to pay shouldn't if the rest of us have to.

Over 75 licence fee saga was ito help those poor pensioners switch from analog to digital without being financially burdened buying new tv/digital receiver and aerial .It was never supposed to be a long term concession imo .It got turned into a political football ,free tv licence was imposed on bbc by regulator and bbc tried to get gov to carry can for taking it away or pay.Think this is why DC renegaded on promise of doing away with licence and actually made it harder to use bbc services without one .BBC are way to political ,it needs dismantled and regulator needs to be given more power ,impartiality is non existent ,no wonder so many simply refuse to pay for such poor representation by the national broadcaster ,its a disgrace .

It is rather fascinating.

Clever idea, they are not suggesting scraping the licence fee just decriminalising the offence of not having one, wouldn't think they would have to wait for the end of the current arrangements to do that, Governments free to change laws when and if they wish.

I have never believed in a compulsory tax in order to have a TV in your house. I pay 3 times because I have 2 holiday lets near my house that both need a license and there is no discount for having around 20 weeks per year occupancy. I would be willing to pay for an independent news gathering organisation but it is outrageous to have to pay £150 a year for that and the rest of the BBC output is no different from 5 or 6 other channels. Their sports output is now minimal. I watch TV a lot but less than 5% of my TV time would be BBC and that is nearly all the news channel.

Note it's almost only the lefties that have a problem with the proposal, considering they claim the BBC is anti Corbyn and supports the Tories you would think they would welcome the end of it.

You shouldn't have to pay the BBC to watch 100s of other channels. It's a racket that had it's purpose when the BBC was the only channel. A completely unnecessary £3 a week for families who need to resort to food banks. The corporation needs to stand on it's own two feet, like every other broadcaster for fairness's sake.

Well they're clearly not democratic over Brexit. If fact their stance there flies in the face of democracy. So the democracy claim is bogus for a start. And who decided they should abandon impartiality in politics and oppose the private media?
Blatant racism within the corporation, is another massive problem that infuriates those who would rather see their tax money going to a BBC that operated a meritocracy. Which again scuppers any semblance of democracy, let alone fairness at the BBC.
Basically the BBC are a shabby outfit that have endangered their own existence by not delivering value for money with their programmes, and have infuriated fair minded people by pursuing their own agendas. Which is why few people watch the BBC, or would be bothered if it closed down tomorrow.

It will save the public £4bn a year. If you really want to invest more in the NHS, housing, education, the police etc and live in the real world, where you can only afford to spend what you earn, here is a gift that benefits the poor proportionately far more than the wealthy. The focus should be on how we can earn more money to invest in public services, but somehow that part of the equation never enters the debate, creating the delusion that in the UK money grows on trees. And here is effectively £4bn a year sitting on a tree ready to be picked, and it will be the deluded luvvies who will be most against it

the bbc have gone rogue and their support must be at its absolute lowest ever
they will not survive without the licence fee, and lots of well paid jobs are looking a bit more anxiously at how long left before pension plops on the carpet
do we need the bbc,...do they have a unique selling point any more
do they deserve to survive
would we miss them
its goodnight from me ...

and if some see it as the last bastion of democracy and defender from news being dominated by the vested interests of billionaires in the eyes of many. then they won't have any problems paying for the subscription.
The people who will benefit most will be the young and the poor, who won't pay for it as it' simply not worth it. For goodness sake that's a good idea and a no brainer as they are the 2 groups that need the money most.

The BBC will soon be a complete waste of money altogether.
Disgusting, the BBC is becoming little more than a vehicle for the careers of the privately educated left-wing.

The BBC can't have it both ways. The move to switch off the red button is a move with the times decision, but the licence fee is something that should have been scrapped 30 years ago.

Labour will want to keep it going as a propaganda tool. Wave goodbye to any last vestiges of impartiality. They know that their role models like Mao and Putin make sure there is no anti Government stuff on TV.

The government is to consider whether failure to pay the TV licence fee should cease to be a criminal offence, a Treasury minister has said. Rishi Sunak confirmed Prime Minister Boris Johnson has ordered a review of the sanction for non-payment of the £154.50 charge, which funds the BBC. Prosecution for non-payment of the fee can currently end in a court appearance and potential fine of up to £1,000. But the BBC warned decriminalisation could cost it £200m a year.
I think they Might find the Loss Figure they are saying is a Little Low ..

The potential fine is the first step towards a jail term if it's not paid.
So enforcement of the license fee is backed by sending people to jail if they don't comply.

For the spivs this purely ideological spite and a vendetta against the BBC , Bullingdon is similar to Trump in that he wants evade any kind of scrutiny and will indeed seek to blame anybody but himself and hid vile cronies from having to justify anything he does , divide and conquer is always the classic tory con trick , they are it again big time

It's no wonder the Radio 4 Today programme is being boycotted for interviews by the government.
Listen to an interview with a Labour MP and it resembles a Labour party political broadcast.
While an interview with a Tory MP is more like the Tories being put on trial, with the interviewer as the prosecuting council.
The BBC have overstepped the mark, and now they're being brought to heel.

anxiou when Boris was reported by his neighbour for arguing with his partner it filled the BBC pages for weeks. Contrast that with the ZERO coverage of Abbots son being arrested for hitting and spitting at a police officer. Any comment on why that was?

Not sure why we have this thread Moisok as, if memory serves me right, from a similar thread it was established that 95% of poster didn't have a TV licence.

Get rid of the BBC if they as a company cannot afford it. If we want to watch & listen to it we will pay for it. It's not free for anyone apart from the mean tested 75+. It's almost 2020 need to get with the times.

I would think I have watched less and less of the bbc over the years and the last few months only for a few minutes. Not good is it. Once it lost most of its sport that was it - the news particularly, the eu debate turned me off more and more - I couldn't believe how it was being portrayed, which was confirmed with the 82 percent guests being Pro Eu.
