A patient has been diagnosed with the rare viral infection monkeypox in the south west of England.

It is believed the patient contracted the infection while visiting Nigeria, Public Health England (PHE) said.

According to the World Health Organisation, the condition is similar to human smallpox and although it is much milder, it can be fatal.

The patient has been transferred to a specialist infectious disease centre at Guy's and St Thomas' in London.

Never heard of it, I just looked it up, The person with it contracted it in Nigera.from the article.....Monkeypox can be spread when someone is in close contact with an infected person. The virus can enter the body through broken skin, the respiratory tract or through the eyes, nose or mouth.

It can also be spread by contact with infected animals such as monkeys, rats and squirrels, or by virus-contaminated objects, such as bedding and clothing.

It was much better when people used to travel the world and migrate by boat . Any unpleasant disease would be confined to the ship for a sufficient period of time that if serious the crew and passengers would perish before reaching land thus potentially preventing the spread of the infection (Mary Celeste?) .
Now just hop on a plane and in just a matter of hours whatever evil virus is lurking within one individual is transferred to all other passengers and then further afield before authorities have time to react . It's gonna end in tears I tell ya , tears !

It reminds me of the Ricky Gervais routine.

Doctor to patient: You’ve either contracted this disease by ****ing a monkey, or by eating infected bushmeat from poachers.

Patient: Erm, let’s go with that second thing.
