The "venti" (a pint) Starbucks Signature Caramel Hot Chocolate made
with oat milk but topped with whipped cream had the most.

It contains 23 teaspoons (93.7g) of sugar and 758 calories, which
Action on Sugar says is as much as three cans of Coca-Cola or four
white chocolate and strawberry muffins.

Next was Caffe Nero's Grande Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate made
with skimmed milk - containing 15 teaspoons (nearly 60g) of sugar
and 503 calories....[good job they used skimmed milkLaugh]

Third highest in sugar was a venti Starbucks Gingerbread Latte made
with oat milk - containing 14 teaspoons (56.6g) of sugar and 523 calories -
the same as 17 custard cream biscuits.

Sugar is pure energy, just what you need to recharge your batteries or to start the day.

Contrary to what we are led to believe, sugar does not readily turn to fat.
In fact very little of it turns to fat.

Taking fructose is the quickest way to recharge your energy cells if they're run down from exercise.

Like smoking and drinking you can only do so much.

Let them do it. What's the problem?

In the last 30 years or so, sugar consumption crept back down. During that period, it was highest in 1982, when Britons were eating around 42 kilos of refined sugar per head per year, but it fell by 10 per cent, or around 4 kilos, during 1980 to 2000.

...

We still eat around 0.56 kilos of sugar a week – around 30 kilos a year.

https://www.channel4.com/news/how-sweet-is-our-love-q-a

In other words, sugar consumption has been falling dramatically for decades, to the extent that we consume 29% less of it now than we did 37 years ago. And that was a time when most of us were as thin as rakes compared with now.

The difference between now and 1982? Back then we actually carried the stuff home from the shops. Now, thanks to supermarket trolleys or online shopping, we don't even carry it to the bloody car.

Other sugars and starch are converted to glucose which is the source of energy used by the body to perform all of its functions, mainly muscle movements. Too much of it is a problem because the body converts excess energy to fat reserves which can be mobilised if insufficient food is available in the future. That is the simple picture we all learn in biology but there are other things going on. Protein consists of amino acids which are used to build muscle and other tissue. Some are essential because the body can't synthesise them, others are not. Surplus protien is converted to energy (glucose) but it is not very efficient. Fat in the diet is either stored in fatty tissue or converted into glucose if required.

Lucozade, Pepsi, three spoonfuls minimum in your tea, Spangles ... much the same as today really. But, as 1st Time Poster says, along with all sorts of fruit, medicine, and basically just for the hell of it, because it tastes nice. I can remember it being a real treat eating out as a child in the Sixties, because every caff and restaurant boasted a bowl of sugar cubes on the table from which you just helped yourself. And stuffed a dozen in your pocket to munch on the walk home too.

But it didn't matter one jot from the point of view of weight gain, because even by 1970 only half of UK households had access to a car. A regular complaint of housewives was having to lug 2 lb bags of sugar home from the shops (which they had to do regularly, because their families consumed so much of the stuff).

When they got home, clothes were washed and wrung out by hand over the bath (harder work than you think), because few had washing machines. They lugged coal in from the bunker to keep warm. Basically, everyone carried things, or did what would now be termed resistance exercise. And now, hardly anyone does that at all. A few people jog, a few people drive to the gym to lift weights, but virtually no one combines the two, and carried something from A to B. Ever.

Ergo,  lardarses.
