Have now watched this and even though 3 and a half hours long glad I did.

Story from imdb

Frank "The Irishman" Sheeran is a man with a lot on his mind. The former labor union high official and hitman, learned to kill serving in Italy during the Second World War. He now looks back on his life and the hits that defined his mob career, maintaining connections with the Bufalino crime family. In particular, the part he claims to have played in the disappearance of his life-long friend, Jimmy Hoffa, the former president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, who mysteriously vanished in late July 1975 at the age of 62.

Polished performances as ever from De Niro, Pacino & Pesci along with many familiar faces including Stephen Graham who is also as good as ever as Tony Pro. Several key moments in history are placed in the film and it works very well and leaves food for thought. Obviously a genre very close to Scorsese and this is probabkly his parting gift to us on the matter. I am very grateful for it. Will deffo one day spare 3 and a half hours again watching it. Comparisons with Goodfellas are going to be obvious and doubt any film will come close to that classic but just enjoy this film for what it is. Solid 8/10 for me and would anyone with netflix to give it a go.

Anyone on here watched it already? What do you make of it?

it's OK but it's no Goodfellas. The de-aging doesn't work for me - De Niro is 76 and moves like it - decrepit body with a funny head stuck on top. It's not very well written either.
Report alun2005 • December 1, 2019 2:50 PM GMT
I saw it in an independent cinema on Wednesday. It's a good film and the 3 and a half hour length was not a problem.

The much talked about "ageing" and "de-ageing" of the actors was not any sort of distraction to my eyes.

I'd read the book the best part of 15 years ago, and it was around 10 years ago I first heard De Niro talking it up as a film project.  I think Pesci just edged it.

It's an absorbing film. The most obvious thing that's missing from it is some of those unforgettable scenes that lit up 'Goodfellas' and 'Casino'.

De Niro is 76 ,Watched him in Joker thought he Looked very well for his age
Report Super Hans • December 1, 2019 2:55 PM GMT
Agree that the de-ageing takes some getting used to. It's like watching Bugsy Malone in reverse.
Think it will appeal to the Goodfellas / Casino generation but no one else.
Decent watch 6/10.
Report HGS • December 1, 2019 3:07 PM GMT
Yeah a lots been said of the de-aging but it really wasn't a problem for me. Agree it doesn't have the unforgettable scenes like Goodfellas did but this is more of a character study to me.

glad this is on netflix, dont think I could sit in a cinema for over 3 hours
Report acey deucy • December 1, 2019 4:32 PM GMT
If it's mentioned in the same breath as goodfellas and casino that is good enough for me.
Report Torquemada • December 1, 2019 4:42 PM GMT
I think De Niro is overrated, but it’s still a very good film.

Agree with OP. It’s an 8 from me.

This is gangster Forrest Gump, where every historical landmark except Apollo11 is linked to "dis thing of ours."
Report flushgordon1 • December 1, 2019 5:17 PM GMT
I think that's as good a review as I've seen biscuits.
Report unitedbiscuits • December 1, 2019 5:23 PM GMT
If you enjoyed Goodfellas (like me) it delivers: this time there is a scene where a whole parking lot of yellow cabs are set alight!
It's very well done, a bit like going to a Rolling Stones concert.

I also found the ageing process a little distracting, De Niro especially. As previously mentioned he moved like the old man he is; some things cannot be altered. That being said, the film was appealing and easily watched for 3.5 hours. Its an interesting take on the story too, which I'd like to go into more but don't want to spoil it for those yet to view. 6/10 is about right for me too and I may watch it again at some point, but I won't be going out of my way.

good film, will be the last of its type with those great actors.

stephen graham is top draw too. the scene in his shorts and late dfor the meeting with hoffa was excellent
Report PorcupineorPineapple • December 1, 2019 10:49 PM GMT
Was good, but samey. Needed a couple of big set pieces more to go with Hoffa going to the house.
Report timbuctooth • December 2, 2019 5:01 AM GMT
Stop with the seemingly obligatory bowing to the crowd involved in this rubbish! They all might have made a few good movies over the years, but this one`s dire! It`s not about Shearan, Hoffa or anybody else, it`s clearly, and purely, a swansong vehicle  for Scorsese, De Niro et al to tell the world; `we`re all old now, here`s one last gangster movie to tell the world that we`ll be dead soon`. Self-indulgent drivel, if you haven`t seen it yet, don`t bother, it really is an embarrassment to all involved

walofs. all these gangster films are offensive garbage, from the godfather onwards. no surprise the intellectually retarded wanchors that saturate this forum enjoy them. there is nothing glam about the reality of the squalid business of extortion drug smuggling and murder. all this bollox about honour and family and respect is the most risible nonsense.and all the gaylord actors that play mafiosi tough guys. in case you were unaware, all actors are preposterous pansies who should be deprecated rather than venerated. over 100% of them are benders. thats quite a lot.

And there they all were, admiring the vast, over-inflated balloon, when along comes grappler with the shiniest, sharpest pin you've ever seen.

Typical Scorsese -- 3.5 hours and still baffling for anyone who's not swotted up on the story beforehand.

I've not even seen it yet and am already having flashbacks to having to explain the basic con in Wolf of Wall Street.

Excellent film, although the CGI took a little time to get used to.
Direction as one would expect is excellent and cast list from the university of excellence.
Instead of the Super Human, Cartoon,Science Fiction,Fantasy rubbish churned out for the benefit of the
16-30 generation,an adult film to cherish.

I've no knowledge if Netflix funded this enterprise but by showing in cinemas it's now eligible for Oscars.
Report acey deucy • December 2, 2019 12:27 PM GMT
Nothing worthy of an Oscar in this Movie imho.

I'll wait till for the better technology to kick in for me to by into thesr type of de-ageing films...

It all looked too plastic for me.. I was half expecting De Niro's face from The Deerhunter to be plastered on in the flashback scenes...

Ctrl shift face on youtube has better effects on his channel. I'll all urge you to check him out.

After reading the above reviews.....
I'll wait till this is shown free on channel five.

The de-ageing was just silly, esp the first meeting of de niro and joe pesci.. they were supposed to be young 20s but moved just like mid 70 year olds. Imagine if they tried that in The Godfather 2.. would have been ridiculous.

Really did enjoy the movie/story though. Left me wondering how true the Hoffa ending was.

Finally found the 3 hours and 29 minutes to watch this.
As a gangster film nut I was hoping Scorcese and his pals would finish with a belter and at least not a turkey.

I thought it was fantastic , the de-aging bothered me not one bit ..... 10/10 for me.
