if you earn less than £ 118 per week then you dont pay nat ins and dont get credits for pension, between 118 and 166, you dont pay but i think employer pays but you get credits, over  £166. you pay your own  nat ins , but anyone know if you have 2 jobs, that pay eg £70 and the other £70, in total earning £140 , do you still get credits , ?

even though you don't get job seekers allowance you still have to jump through same looking for work hoops to get your stamp paid, and its all wriiten down evidence of job finding etc,no online account to show your looking
Report elisjohn November 25, 2019 8:16 PM GMT
jobseekers allowance isnt available my area any more, so you have to go on universal credit, there is the new rule js allowance  but thats now only if youve paid contributions for last 2 years .

Whoops, new style sorry, not new rule

even if youre short of the 35 years, im not sure if id pay voluntary contributions, doesnt pension credit top it up anyway
Report mymumsfinethankyou November 25, 2019 8:57 PM GMT
depends on savings you have as well
Report 1st time poster November 25, 2019 8:58 PM GMT
not if you've access to private pension, other monies
that moron ex pension minister steve webb doing a case study in todays mail about a bloke trying to get pension credit on toip of his 136 quid state pension whilst he,s got a pension pot of 110 grand he doesn't want to access till he,s 70
answer been they,ll decide he could get say 5 grand a year in an annuity or drawdown and even if he doesn't take it till he,s 70 they,ll work on the basis he could have it and it takes way beyond limit of pension credits
even if he blows the lot, gives it to kids etc they,ll decide he,s frittered it away and still refuse credits

I just had a look at mine through the gateway site & am a bit puzzled.iv got a few contribution gaps because of working abroad but the projected amount is well above the £168 top rate that 1st time poster mentions,is that possible?

^^He will have serps/SSP payments due which take him above the new level, these won't be subject to triple lock though, so if that continues the difference will erode over time.
Report 1st time poster November 26, 2019 4:27 PM GMT
yes barrowboy means you probably never signed over to a private provider, serps in/out ,and will be calculates as state pensions 1 and 2,in hindsight seems it would be better if we,d all left our money in government side, another miss selling scam by private providers

the average of my peers in my game, just over average pay in lifetime, who didn't sign out of ss2 are getting roughly 230 squid, which means your private pot needs to give you roughly 5 grand a year, that's a pot of about 120,000,there wont be many pots anyewhere near that,
I,m led to believe that the ssp2 part of astate pension doiesnt come under the triple lock, but maybe wrong, plus you have the safety, peace of mind of been backed by state as compared to charges, fees, decisions,in private pots

Things have changed since first Gordon Brown and then David Cameron re-arranged pension entitlement. I am not sure if the changes affect everyone or just those who started work after the changes. In my case, I get the minimum state pension plus what is called earnings related which add up to £225 per week. I retired at 56 but paid a self employed NI contribution of a nominal amount for the 9 years until I reached 65. It is very well worth doing that if you can. If you earn very little or even nothing you could make this payment when I was doing it but that is now 10 years ago. Call the Pension people and ask. Two or more incomes were not aggregated when calculating NI contributions when I was an employer but again things might change.
Report dave1357 November 26, 2019 5:44 PM GMT
Only 1% of those complaining about serps optouts have their cases upheld by the ombudsman.

In addition to this there are millions who stayed in serps/ssp, who will have paid higher NI and will get very little more than the new pension. If they are compared to those who contracted out, they are far worse off, because the second group paid less NI and will get a private pension on top of the new level.
Report sageform November 26, 2019 5:46 PM GMT
Just checked. To get the earnings related you need to be born before 1951 so if you are still working you probably don't qualify.
Report elisjohn November 26, 2019 5:50 PM GMT
sageform, why did you pay the 9 years from the age 56 , youd only need 30 years anyway if born before 1951, did you miss out on quite a few years earlier of credits
Report elisjohn November 26, 2019 5:54 PM GMT
very unfair that someone could work 3 part time jobs earning 100£ in each, and not get credits for state pension, while you could be  on the dole for 35 years and get the full credits

dog walking £20 now and then, register as self employed and pay class 2 nics @ £156 for the year.  That get's you about £250 pa extra pension.

i am self employed and work part time approx 12 hours a week , when i sent my self assesment in i was told i didnt have to pay nics but could if i wanted to ?  will it benefit me paying them or not ?
Report Deplasterer January 12, 2020 6:29 PM GMT
Foyles, get your state pension forecast within HMRC online to see if you have made enough contributions to claim your full state pension when you retire. If you have already paid enough contributions there is no point voluntarily paying class 2 nics.
Report FOYLESWAR January 12, 2020 6:34 PM GMT
how do i do that deplasterer ? and thanks for the advice .
Report FOYLESWAR January 12, 2020 6:35 PM GMT
sorry for my ignorance deplas ,do i just go onto thier website and find the forcast ?
Report Deplasterer January 12, 2020 7:04 PM GMT
Let me check, and I'll post how you get it Foyles. Gimme 10 mins or so.
Report Deplasterer January 12, 2020 7:22 PM GMT
Right Foyles, I assume you hava an accountant that does your SA Returns? So I assume that you are not signed up to government gateway, if you are signed up already ignore the following: Go to HMRC online and follow the procedures for signing up to government gateway, very user friendly, so nothing strenuous involved. When you have been fully signed up you can access your Personal tax details.

When signed in to your account do the following:

On home page ( Business tax summary), scroll down to:

View your personal tax summary (click linkl

Scroll down to Pensions, click on: View your Pension forecast.

Here you will find all you need, ie. What your current state pension will pay out on retirement, and if relevant how many tax years are outstanding to claim your full entitlement, this will of course depend on your current age etc..

If you are owing years, come back to me or pm if you want to keep private.

Any problems come back.

Hope this helps.

Report Deplasterer January 12, 2020 8:40 PM GMT
Snowy, Twitter is good but unfortunately they don't do individual queries just general tax advice. Ask them how you go about paying class 2 nics voluntarily, at the very least they will give you address to write to, I think its in Newcastle upon Tyne off the top of my head.

Don't go near phone waste of space.
