A new EU regulation says that all new cars must have integrated breathalysers and speed-limiters by 2022. Existing models sold after 2024 must also have this updated safety technology. The British Government has confirmed the standards will apply in the United Kingdom, despite Brexit.

Pity the owners of such as "Bugatti Veyron" and other supercars, being limited to 56mph; the same as an HGV and
"Vauxhall Corsa".....

Before you take the self administered "Breathalyser Test" do you have to read "The Miranda Rights" and won't it be somewhat difficult to blow, at the same time as saying "keep blowing, keep blowing.....

Do you advocate driving whilst drunk and speeding?
I don't. I am a good citizen.

Yes mate, £10 and I'll do the breathalyser for you.

Jesus wept Angoose is willing to bend over and take it up the 'arris as he's a 'good citizen with nothing to worry about'!
That's just the sort of response they want people to take!
I'm starting to think a full reset is needed before we actually end up in the full Orwellian nightmare
Report Dr Crippen November 25, 2019 10:58 AM GMT
Proper drinkers will need to keep a pair of bellows in the car to use for blowing into the device.

Or leave the engine running while they're in the pub.

Nah, anyone who can't afford to run a car will take that view.

What other laws and decent behaviours are you opposed to?

Report Dr Crippen November 25, 2019 11:49 AM GMT
So every time you want to start your car you have to get past the breathalyser test?

What happens when the car cuts out in traffic when you have to stop, like so many do these days?

I can see long lines of cars with their drivers blowing into the device every 20 yards to get the engine started again.

This is going to be good.
Report edy November 25, 2019 12:29 PM GMT
No, car makers have to design new cars with a standardised interface for the easier installation of aftermarket alcohol-interlock-systems. Neither does the EU demand that the car makers install breathalyzers into their cars themselves, nor that every driver has to do a breath test before starting the engine.

what are you saying edy?  trilby is posting lies about the EU?  Who would have thought it.

Not on purpose from him I don't think. It's simply falling for sloppy/sensationalist journalism (with that particular website sadly being far from the only one who reported it wrongly)

That's from the link in the OP.

I certainly do my old chum.

But should we weaken occasionally, it looks like we can still carry on drinking and driving.
And there's never been a better time for decades to drink and drive than there is now with so few police about.

But don't forget to take care if you do, you don't want to have an accident.

Don't forget about the GPS device which all cars must have.

BB may not be watching you but he will certainly be able to if he so chooses.

How times change.

My father told me of a bloke he knew who frequently got drunk. And he'd always drive to the pub.

He used to tell his friends down the boozer, that if he got drunk to help him to his car and put him in the drivers seat.
He'd be okay getting home.
That was before the breathalyser.

Someone I knew got drunk and drove his car back from the pub.
The police found him slumped over the wheel at the side of the road after he'd passed out.

The good old days.

People also resistant to change, but these ideas in principle sound like a good idea to me.

Plenty of serious crimes are getting solved by GPS tracking mobiles.  That's a good thing.  Not only for ruling people in but also helps rule people out.
Report Dr Crippen November 25, 2019 3:27 PM GMT
It's people like them who spoil it for the careful drinkers and drivers.
Report Dr Crippen November 25, 2019 3:35 PM GMT
These insurance trackers that log the miles you do, then send you a monthly bill based on your mileage also record the routes taken.

You can see online exactly where your car is at any given time, and which way it went getting there.
