Question Time audience member refuses to accept he's in top 5% of earners despite £80k salary

Not every doctor, accountant or solicitor earns over 80k pa.

That was exactly what I meant in the second line of the OP.  I would guess that an £80k salary would put you in the top 20% of solicitors and accountants.

I could only dream of being a higher rate tax payer

he,s annoyed because the other lying coont Johnson promised to raised the higher rate to 80 grand so if a miracle happened and labour on he,s going to feel 10% worse off, , funniest part was Richard burdgeon been right for the 1st time in his life was that shocked started to disbelieve himself

it boils down to do you want to step over bodies in the street,wait for hours in corridors with your kids ,parents on a trolley in A and E, THINK ABOUT SELLING YOUR PARERNTS HOUSE TO PAY FOR THEIR CARE or pay a bit more tax, only good thing these days is  most of the things that are hurting the lowest in society are also hurting the so called middle classes,higher rate tax payers
if this happened the eventual outcome would be those on 80 grand would start screaming those on 120,plus etc should pay far higher taxes than them

A bit shocked that somebody can be talented enough to earn £80k yet at the same time clueless enough to think that is not even in top 50% of workforce. What job does he do.

Be interesting to know what he spends/squanders his wages on. A whole household of 2 adults & 2 children should be able to lead a very comfortable life with s £80k salary. Housing may be an issue if living in London .

Don't mind people earning really high wages if they have the skills but he is totally clueless.

According to payscale.co the median salary for a solicitor in the UK is £36k. Only 10% earn over £61k.

Actually even more surprised that working in IT that does not realise that he is talented & very well paid.
Maybe all his friends earn £80k + but still totally clueless.

I doubt many people would shed a tear if he can't gat a contract & has to settle of a "pauper's" £60k contract.

If he is a IT consultant working for many different clients he could set up his own business and give himself a low salary with the rest in dividends.

Good luck to him that he is obviously very skilled but I think he is a total n0b. Shut up & pay you tax.

He said something along the lines of "...you're going after the PAYE..." so he may well be an employee and have the word "consultant" in his job title.

In any case, he'll only pay the higher rate on the amount, if any, he earns over £80k.  I suspect a lot of people don't realise this. Maybe he's one of them.

The 20% band is more than enough to live off. If he's going into the higher rate of tax he should put it into a pension and avoid the tax.

Maybe he was thinking about wealth, ie assets, but he said income.  He said he wasn't in the top 50%.

Yep if someone earns 80k but spends 90k they aint wealthy

muppets like him cant get his head round or believe well over 50% of workers earn under 30 grand,millions under 20, but obviously nowadays far more families have man and wife working as in the past
