HELP : 'digital' books for tablet computers (etc) costing £0.00

Can't help alun, except to say I have bought a few books from them and the 'free books' have been on there for so long any scam/s would have perhaps come to light?.

Cheers Foxy. Always good to hear from you. I remember seeing books priced at £0.00 before, but in order to buy them you had to be a paid member of some monthly scheme.

The ones I spotted just now appear to be completely free.

Maybe they are Prime or Audible

I toggle the price range from 0.88p to about £3.30 to find current bargains.
(the 88p gets rid of the thousands and thousands of self-published efforts)

Rather than advertise a specific book, the easiest thing might be to go to that amazonian place (Uk version) and do the following :

1. Select 'Kindle Store' section from the top menu

2. Enter 'Crime' in the space box and let it search

3.  Arrange the results using the Sort feature. Sort by : Price Low to High


At this point you will be presented with umpteen pages of results. The first few books priced at £0.00 require membership of some scheme, but it doesn't take long before you'll see plenty priced at 0.00 without any visible strings attached.

I would say the vast majority are self-published authors giving away their work for free, hoping to get picked up by a publisher.
The large review rating numbers are mainly because they are free. Build up a reputation on Amazon and GoodReads and a few get picked up. 

Also many authors give away the first book in Series free, hoping you will read, enjoy and BUY the rest of the series.
Many on this list will be Book Number #1

Crime and Thrillers are the most popular self-published arena (after Romance)

Using my method above, I pick out bestselling published authors like Peter May, David Baldacii and Ken Follett

All their Kindle Books are £5-£10, but showing me a few are currently 99p. None are, or have ever been, Free

Hidden amongst the self-publishers and no-hopers there are actually a few decent looking reads priced at £0.00, which I will take a chance on at the price.

I see that one wannabe writer called Charles Dickens has put all of his books in a collection on there for free. Someone should tell this herbert that books about people with silly made-up names like 'Martin Chuzzlewit' (FFS) will never catch on.

Public Domain authors Dickens, Mary Shelley, Lewis Carroll, etc.

I've bought quite a lot of Victorian novels for free (as has been stated they are all in the public domain of course.) There are quite a few by once-famous authors like Harrison Ainsworth,Henry Kingsley,Edward Bulwer-Lytton,R D Blackmore etc that are otherwise out of print. The snag is more typos than you would get in a print edition but I've not had anything that is unreadable.
My personal problem is that I have become OCD about only reading one book at a time and finishing whatever I start. About 6 months ago I started The Decline and Fall of The Roman Empire ( I think that did cost 99p ). I'm about 57% of the way through. As my health isn't great I'm beginning to think it might be the last book I ever read.

If it's any comfort, Edward Gibbon lasted only a small few years after the last volume was published.
