Baby goods retailer Mothercare has said it plans to call in administrators to the troubled firm's UK business, putting 2,500 jobs at risk.

Mothercare said its 79 UK stores were "not capable" of achieving a sufficient level of profitability and that so far it had failed to find a buyer.

It said its stores would continue to trade as normal for the time being.

Analysts said Mothercare had been slow to adapt to competition from rivals and the switch to online retailing.

Mothercare has already gone through a rescue deal, known as a company voluntary arrangement (CVA). This is an insolvency process that allows a business to reach an agreement with its creditors to pay off all or part of its debts. The process enabled the chain to shut 55 shops.

Eldest daughter at uni and does a few hours for Mothercare. They all got a bonus last month in her store for surpassing targets. Might be a case of closing  even more non-profit making stores but where does it end? Doesn't look good long term. Another great name in big trouble. Sad

always sad to hear of yet another familiar name and brand going under or moving to a different guise, kinda of picks away at your childhood memories of seeing or going to all these places, no more Toys R' us, Woolworths, Dixon's, Safeways, Threshers, Comet, BHS, Blockbusters, Rumbelows!...least Kwik Saved made a comeback lol. Would imagine the likes of Argos and the long suffering Marks and Spencers will sooner or later fall or move online only, though I hear Greggs is doing really well.

My wife works for a small firm who supply Mothercare and they are owed a lot of money that might force them under. Sad Incidentally they were paid a significant sum on Thursday or Friday, 2/3 weeks ahead of schedule.  Seems now it was a friendly member of staff helping them out before the taps were turned off.

Mothercare were in an impossible situation because they couldn't squeeze suppliers like Amazon and Boots, because everyone knew they were a risk.

Baby shop Mamas & Papas has collapsed into administration today with six store closures and up to 125 jobs axed - just three days after rival Mothercare went bust putting 2,500 people out of work.

The retailer has made 73 staff redundant with immediate effect and has put 54 further jobs at risk within its head office as another of Britain's high street chains crumbled.

Mamas & Papas said its unprofitable stores in Aberdeen, Preston, Milton Keynes, Lincoln, Leamington and Fareham closed today as a result.

The company, which had 27 stores and three concessions, said its remaining stores will continue to trade as normal, as well as online.

Thankfully Mamas and Papas weren't customers.  My wife's firm trying to do a large deal with a Saudi company atm, but the Saudis are crooks so that's very worrying

Amazon are right bastards. I know the wife's firm don't make any money supplying them.  It's more they feel they need to have a presence there.  The govt need to do something regarding rents and rates to even up the playing field between foreign online giants and UK HS firms

Totally agree clydebank. Shocking what these massive firms pay. It's not fair and needs sorting.
