If you want to commit suicide, it's a quick and easy method. It's not like America where you've probably got a rifle in the wardrobe. Ruinous for the train driver's mental health, I'd have thought, and not much better for the people who have to clean up the remains for a quarter of a mile of track.

A woman I'd known at school went that way. Said goodbye to her husband at the station, walked down to the tube platform and made thousands of commuters late for work.

One of my brothers, the one 1 year younger than me is a train driver for South West trains, in the last 5 years he has had 5 jumpers under his train. All 5 were men and as you can imagine all were literally smashed to pieces, beheaded the lot. He gets counselling, time off and support but he says he just has to switch off and not dwell on it too much. Me personally, I really would not cope with that very well.

Must be awful slippy. I really can't see how it can be stopped if someone is determined. They can't be in the right place but really is a selfish way to go. Sad

When people take their own lives it is not an easy decision

I knew two men who committed suicide they were in a terrible state of mind....they could not be reached.

Nowadays it is predominantly men who commit suicide because our society has become so orientated towards women

When I was younger when society was more men orientated towards men it was women who tended to commit suicide.

We need to create a society where both sexes feel they have a future.

Just my own opinion

I know lots of people young and old from all kinds of backgrounds who have commited suicide and I'm sure theres  record numbers commiting this act .it's very sad .I've looked for the numbers but can't find them .im sure it's getting out of hand and more help is needed .
There must be lots of parents out there who would welcome more help for all children .as they all have a mother and father

One answer to the problem in your OP is that there is a lot of railway lines out there...

A lot are fenced off but if someone is determined they will gain access

I think the main problem is, why are these young men doing it surely?

I honestly believe our "everyone's a winner" PC attitude is at least partly to blame here (I accept that there are multiple reasons for committing suicide).

If you give a prize every time someone fails during their formative years, they become unable to cope with failure in adulthood.  They've never experienced it, let alone had to deal with it!

At a ridiculously low level, my other half's daughter enjoys horse riding and does some junior shows.  At every show there's a course of poles called "Clear Round", which, as the name suggests, you can go around in your own time and get a rosette at the end if you get a "clear round".  Except she will cry and cry and cry until the person supervising it takes pity on her and lowers all the poles on one side to the ground, virtually guaranteeing she gets a clear round.  She doesn't want to achieve anything.  All she's bothered about is cheating her way to this rosette.  I'm telling you, it's a dangerous game to play, and it drives me potty.  We are breeding generations fro whom this is all they will have ever known.

If we had better mental health awareness we might improve and reduce thes numbers of young men who die from suicide.
Surely we can at least help some of these people ... many times there are signs / signals which precipitate what ultimately happens so shouldn't everyone at least be aware of some signs to look out for.
I don't believe it is the pressure to be "winners" but more the pressure of everyday life ... some simply cope better than others .. perhaps in young men there is something within the brain which triggers the stress because we still evolve within our body development until we are adults.

Obviously it must put a tremendous pressure on train drivers which can result in its own adverse mental condition

No winners in this I'm afraid but surely we can do something to reduce the number with advanced help for those who struggle so badly with their problems ...

more pressure of everyday life.some simply cope better than others.i think your spot on there 1956.and for young girls committing suicide i think social media has a lot to answer for. and reality tv bollocks dont help either.to much pressure on young girls to look perfect.not the real world.

The figures on suicide are not accurate. Some that are 100% suicide the verdict is given as open.RIP to anyone troubled enough to kill themselves. How Slippyblues brother has handled it is amazing, one would be enough for me.Sad

I knew 3 people who commited suicide [40.35 and 20] and none of them showed any signs that this action is what they were considering. Some people don't deal with problems as easy as others, and what we might consider as being a minor problem, they may think that its not worth going on.

What i would say, is that suicide doesn't end the problem, it just passes it on to the loved ones left behind

I agree with a fair amount of whay has been said and I work with young people. Too many have such low levels of resilience from having parents helicoptering around them to pick them up when they 'fail', the rosette example above being a case in point. When you don't smother them with pity when they fail, you are considered a heartless barsteward! There is a balance though depending on the individual.
The whole 'Man up' thing does work either because some children need some direction and advice.

I interviewed an 18 year old two weeks ago for a position working with children. I called him to give the interview feedback with some very positive comments and he was good but got pipped by someone else. It was close.
Next day his mother emailed me to say how crestfallen he was, as was she and that she didn't feel it was fair that the person who got the job had more experience. You couldn't make it up. I am so glad that I didn't give him the job because had something gone wrong, his mother would alsmost have certainly been on my case..and no, the lad in question does not have special needs!

Mental Health is so much more on the agenda now days but there's a long way to go.

I know it is not the only reason but how many of them are taking drugs or prescription medicines that affect their approach to decision making? Knife crime, anger management, dangerous driving, suicide are all affected by these pernicious substances.

most kids dont have to make decisions, their parents do everything for them and teach them nothing and then they go into the real world totally unprepared

Depends where you live. In large towns (places I only know about through the media as I never go there) it seems that most kids are on the streets from the age of 12 unless they are on social media. In rural areas the opposite is the case as many kids are not within walking or cycling distance of their friends so can only interact with other kids at school. I was one of the latter but never felt that my parents held me back from the age of 12.

It's amazing how we seem to be losing the basic skills of life, such as how to bring up children.

A primitive living in mud hut in the jungle, seems to have more idea of bringing up kids than the best brains we can produce.

"what sort of mental state must you be in to throw yourself in front of a train?.it really really sad that young feel the need to do this"

It's middle aged men in their 40s who are most at risk of suicide, although I believe that the rate of increase is greatest in the 16-22 range, which is hardly surprising.

Killing oneself seems a bizarre way to think if things turn against you.
Surely the natural response is to take it out on the one who put you in that position if that were the case?

Sadly the little person can't reach them if you know what I mean Dr.

People can be driven into deep holes.

Crudely you need to be prepared and if it is sudden then, good climate boots, rope and some help.

It can be very hard.

There were two suicides in my mother's family.  Her grandad jumped in The Rhine and her cousin hung himself at school.  So I imagine suicide has been going on for a long time.
