about a year ago i opened the door of the garden shed and as i did a black cat suddenly  jumped out and ran past me , nearly gave me a heart attack feck knows how long or how he got in there ,musta sneaked in when one of my sons was putting his fishing gear in . anyway the cat started appearing on top of the shed most days and as it was getting cold the missus suggested making a shelter for it which we did in the form of one of those plastic storage tubs with a lid measuring about 3ft by 1 foot and about 15 inches tall we cut a hole about 8 inches square for an entrance /exit and cut up an old quilt for insulation and put the tub on the roof of the shed . the cat soon started going in and out and now sleeps in the tub every night and is in there a lot of the day especially if it is raining ,we put food out for it and it seems his mate (a smaller black cat ) has invited himself along for the party , ffs hope they havent got any more mates .

thank you shirl , this afternoon a very bold magpie flew onto the garden fence while  the cat was on the roof only about 12 foot between them  and a hopped down to where i put the cats food bowl out and helped himself seemed to be keeping one eye on the cats and one on the grub  the cat jumped off the roof and very nearly caught the bird , amazing as the magpie knew the cat was there and still took the chance .either very brave or stupid but very lucky .
