This queen's speech is a total joke - the tories can propose anything they like because it wont happen - they are 40 short of a majority so this is just a charade.

The Yeoman of the Guard - the oldest British military corps in existence - has already sprung into action this morning.

They carried out their ceremonial search of the cellars ahead of the Queen's Speech.

It dates back to Guy Fawkes being caught red-handed in 1605 as he attempted to blow up Parliament.

Her Maj 65th Queens speech......Hats off

Why is it called the Queen's Speech when in fact it is the Prime Minister's Speech Delivered by The Queen?

The Queen's Speech is delivered by the Queen from the throne in the House of Lords.

Although the Queen reads the Speech, it is written by the government.

The tradition of the State Opening of Parliament and the delivery of the speech can be traced back to the 16th century.

The House of Lords official ‘Black Rod’ is sent to summon the Members of the House of Commons.

The doors to the Commons chamber are symbolically shut in his or her face – symbolising the independence from the monarchy.

Black Rod then strikes the door three times before it is opened.

MPs then follow Black Rod to the Lords where they stand at the ‘Bar’ to listen to the speech.

When the Queen has delivered her speech and left the House a new parliamentary session starts.

With Boris it's always about the unsaid & it was dealt in spades by HM today e.g. providing simpler, set out a long term vision, unlocking their full potential, will be debated etc etc

Robert Peston

@Peston

This the maddest, most pointless Queen's Speech debate anyone alive has watched - because it is all displacement activity from the only two questions that matter, namely whether the UK is leaving the EU on 31 October (and if so how) and whether there will be a general election before Christmas. As a result it has all the significance and weight of an undergraduate debate on a wet autumn afternoon.
