Report Dr Crippen October 10, 2019 10:05 AM BST
Apparently there was only a very small American presence there, but while the few Americans did stay, the Turkeys were reluctant to risk spilling American blood so they held back.

Then of course as soon as America pulled out, the way was clear for Turkey to go in.

This was Trump completing another of his election pledges.

That's exactly what I was saying, but you still didn't like it.

It makes me smile to see these usual suspects wasting their lives away seething about and knocking the Don day in and day out.  They'll be on their death beds, drawing their final breaths on this mortal coil and ask themselves, "Where did my life go?"  Bitterness and anger rots the soul.  They would be wise to remember and act upon that fact.

@trilby, from what I have read there are only about 1000 american soldiers in Syria.

Thank you, detraveller.  I heard something on the radio earlier about them getting sent to Saudi.  Only heard a snippet, so maybe crossed my wires.  Sure it'll be confirmed soon enough.  Tschüss and good luck with any bets you may have today.
Report detraveller October 12, 2019 10:43 AM BST
It is not as simple as saying a thousand troops are present in Syria. And similarly the move about moving 50 of them isn't that significant. The US could get them back in place in a matter of minutes, though of course it will be tougher to get the same control back immediately.

Then there is neighboring Iraq where I would guess the americans are still present in decent numbers? The planes that do the bombarding surely fly from Iraq and don't really need any ground control in Syria. Also in a place like Syria where there's no air force against them, they probably just use drones and for that they don't need to be present there. I was reading that american drones are watching from the sky as turkish air force whizzes past them for bombardment. But I didn't really get what the author was trying to say.

Then there are the private contractors. A quarter of american strength on the ground in the middle east are private companies offering their services/men. Moving these private troops around doesn't really make news and im guessing they would also not need congress approval for sending more of these like they do for american troops.

In short, what Trump did was basically insignificant. Like I mentioned before, it was just a politicial deal with Erdogan.
Report boxingthefox October 12, 2019 11:05 AM BST
"In short, what Trump did was basically insignificant." detraveller I have to take issue with you, the nightmare is just unfolding. We have seen nothing yet. BTW sending (if it happens) 50 US troops to Saudi is significant, it's called a 'human shield'.
Report detraveller October 12, 2019 11:21 AM BST
Middle East will stay a nightmare for some time. I am not sure what exactly is unfolding if 50 troops change their base. Its already a shethole with everyone trying to bomb the region themselves and not liking it when someone else does.

I don't know much about the troops in Saudi Arabia but moving 50 troops there could easily be a legal move(for the legality of a future war). If America does want to bomb some place there in the future they don't really need an excuse, but its always better to have one.
Report detraveller October 12, 2019 11:23 AM BST
We do know that they moved 50 troops but we dont know if they sent in 100 private troops. And that's the problem with this war business in the middle east.
Report lfc1971 October 12, 2019 11:35 AM BST
