An extension to the deadline will be sought if a deal isn't done by 19th October.  Just cost tories election.  Good. What do the nutjobs do now? There is always Tommy Robinson I suppose.

Calm down.  Didn't the courts say he has to ask for an extension?  Asking doesn't mean getting.  All 27 member states have to unanimously agree.  All you need is a secret agreement with a Eurosceptic country, such as Hungary or Italy, to veto the extension and voila- Boris has asked for an extension as per legal requirement but oh no!  The EU has refused!  Cool
Report Hanx October 4, 2019 5:29 PM BST
Two things

You have to see all of the present political posturing through the prism of bolstering positions ahead of a General Election.

It's pretty clear how that will be fought. The Tories as the party of 'the people' vs. an intransgent Parliament who know what they DON'T want but haven't a scooby what they do, other than extending their time in office to the limit of the FTPA it would appear.

This then is up to and including forcing the noble, principled, BoJo to go against his word and yet again, frustrate 'getting Brexit done'.

Not saying I agree, but that's the theatre at play here.

Also, the Benn Law was concocted in haste and passed with very little scrutiny. It wouldn't suprise me in the slightest if Government lawyers have been pouring over it since it hit the statute books, looking for ways to walk around the actual legalities of what it might say, whilst appearing to comply with the headline imperative.

The sad thing is in a few months you'll all see how obvious this was from the get go.

The only way he could get his treasured PM gig was promising to leave. He didn't have any idea how and in honesty he had no intent either unless something fell into his lap.

But the plan all along was to come up with a deal that'll never be accepted by the EU, promise to leave under no deal before being stopped by parliament and then going to an election trying to fool the brexit-supporting public that it's not his fault it didn't happen but he's on their side and will definitely - definitely - deliver brexit next time.

The EU will not give an extension for no purpose, that purpose would need to be a general election or a referendum, they’ll go for the referendum, rationalising that a general election could return a hung parliament.
Report PorcupineorPineapple October 5, 2019 12:12 AM BST
Don't think the EU would demand that personally. Think they will demand something that sees the current parliamentary impasse unblocked but I think they know they can only ask so much and can't tell us what to do per se.

They will definitely pass it imo. All this talk of tapping up fascist friends overseas is overblown. The EU will be in their other ear telling them what they'll lose if they don't toe the line and it'll be no offers.

I think the EU are actually quite happy for us to leave now. If we remain then you know every election then one of the major parties will probably be bringing this up and promising another chance to leave and they can just do without the hassle.

They just want a deal and smooth exit. No deal is nothing more than misguided jingoistic nonsense confected by posh boys with no skin in the game. If we come up with a deal that ensures the EU is kept intact and Britain is a close trading partner then they'll jump at it I reckon.

hi guys,i was thinking,if a general election is called ,its possible that the UK people may turn on their MP'S and dump them all out because of the way brexit was handled .now i am sure every MP knows this is possible ,so my question is,why would they(all of them)agree to a general election when the chances are that they could all lose their jobs, perhaps the talk of a general election is just more wafflingShockedShockedShocked
Report PorcupineorPineapple October 5, 2019 12:38 AM BST
Because it's all just so much more than a simplistic "general election will wash them all away".

What do you think labour's struggles over the last few years have been or indeed Boris's stance now. It's all very calculated spending obscene sums on political scientists looking at every constituency and making a decision on what your stance would have on winning or retaining that seat.

The tories threat has mostly been from Nige, hence why the angle is aimed at neutering the pro-brexit vote.

Labour's problem is from remainers deserting to vote for the Lib Dems, therefore they are having to come up with an almost remain manifesto.

PRIME MINISTER Boris Johnson was in the same building as a Hungarian Minister and Hungarian ambassador when he claimed to be holding an “emergency” Cabinet meeting on Friday morning.

Footage has emerged of Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto and Ambassador Kristof Szalay-Bobrovniczk leaving the Cabinet Office on Friday morning. The video was reportedly taken at the same time as Boris Johnson held an “emergency” Cabinet meeting. The footage has since sparked speculation of Hungary vetoing a Brexit extension request.

The territory of modern Hungary was for centuries inhabited by a succession of peoples, including Celts, Romans, Germanic tribes, Huns, West Slavs and the Avars. The foundations of the Hungarian state were established in the late ninth century CE by the Hungarian grand prince Árpád following the conquest of the Carpathian Basin.
