Fine Young Cannibals - Johnny Come Home
"What is wrong in my life that I must get drunk every night?" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2H5Se-9XAVE |

By:
My choice has very bitter memories for me, my mate owned a bar in Spain when I lived there and he drank himself to death out of boredom when his wife left him and he would play that song on the jukebox laughing at himself. He died my age,53.

#5 Tracy Chapman - Fast Car
You see my old man's got a problem He lives with the bottle that's the way it is He says his body's too old for working His body's too young to look like his https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwrHwZyFN7M |
|
By:
I'm going to disqualify Tracy despite it being a wonderful song.
It has to be ostensibly about the demon drink. Fine Young Cannibals is borderline. |

#5 I Drink Alone - George Thorogood https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0q8Oho_RjM |

Of course Chapman's song is about the demon drink, her mother went off and left him, so she's been left to look after him. She wants to get away from it all, get a nice job, live in a suburb.

I think 'Fast Car' is a valid choice in this category northanlite.

It may not be her drinking, but it's even worse for her, cuz she's the one who's having to put up with it and live with the consequences.
Jeez, she even had to give up school to look after him! |
|
By:
ok ok, jeezuz man you just wouldn't let it go.

never got better than solitary man for me, very early in his career utterly brilliant. Johnny Cash did a good cover too |

Great song, northanlite
I fear I'm being too mainstream here, however... Whiskey In The Jar, Thin Lizzy |
|
By:
Charlie Rich: Nobody Knows What Goes On Behind Closed Doors
Obviously knocking the cans of 'bow back |
|
By:
i let tracy go and again i say that i really like Thin Lizzy,
one of the best bands i ever saw live, and i have seen a lot, but there may be whiskey in the jar, where i come from it would be whisky, but there is no evidence of large volumes being consumed, in fact the whiskey remained in the jar o for the entirety of the song, i'm sure you see my dilemma |

https://www.songfacts.com/facts/creedence-clearwater-revival/lodi
Drummer Doug Clifford claimed the band played a show in Lodi in their early days. Said Clifford: "There were nine people in there, they were all locals, they were all drunk and all they did all night was tell us to turn it down." Now, if that doesn't earn full kudos for being bad! ![]() |

Brilliant thread and can't argue with the number 1 apart from the fact I love the Johnny Cash version. Brilliant.
Just surprised a tad that nobody has put Chumbawumba up! ![]() |
