Well, I didn't even know this had been made until I noticed it on Sky Movies last night. So I cracked open a bottle of wine, just an ordinary red as it's midweek, and settled down hoping for something good. Have to say it left me rather unfulfilled: not a patch on the original and it certainly couldn't hold a candle to Ted 2.

Not many remakes cut the mustard Johnny imo, especially with classics. Original brilliant film.
Report elisjohn September 26, 2019 5:27 PM BST
the original, one of the best films ever
Report lybertyne September 26, 2019 8:07 PM BST
The original is a classic.  It's rather arrogant to think it can be bettered.
Report pumphol. September 26, 2019 10:01 PM BST
Have they really run out of ideas to even attempt this Crazy
Report SlippyBlue September 28, 2019 8:47 PM BST
I recorded it the other day and I've just watched the first 45 minutes of it this evening and that was quite enough for me and I've just deleted it.
If ever a film should never have had a remake then 'Papillon' must be top 10 material. You can't improve on cinematic perfection, this was absolutely dire beyond words.

Certain films should be totally off limits for remakes - this being one of them. There is talk of one of favourite childhood films being remade - The Goonies. Introduced my boy to this recently and we will be avoiding watching any remake of it as I have also done with Papillon.

Can't see the point of it, haven't seen any of them apart from "The taking of Pelham 123" which I enjoyed but I hadn't seen the original.

Having seen the original "The Italian Job", "Day of the Jackal", "The Ladykillers" and "Papillon" (which I didn't think was that good and not nearly as good as the book), I have no desire to see the remake as I'd be very surprised if they surpassed the original.

Agree book was really really good.
Thought the film was the best cover of a book i'd ever seen.
Whilst the new film was okay. It's destroyed some memories. lol.

The exception to the rule is probably "True Grit", loved the original film and as it was the Cohen's tried the second version. Both Superb and different enough to make it worthwhile.

The remake of Pelham was not bad but still not as good as the original, the fact 95% of remakes are duds my question is WHY ?
Been waiting 25 years from them to try to do a remake of Charlie Varrick & quite surprised it's not been attempted tbh.
Report Baphornet September 29, 2019 8:39 PM BST
over 80 years & a remake of Angels with Dirty Faces still hasn't happened - thankfully
Report Hank Hill September 29, 2019 8:45 PM BST
Funny you should mention that one pixie as I thought about that film, and it works because as you say they're different enough.

Stallone did a remake of Get Carter, it wasn't set in Newcastle thank god but still dreadful.
Report Whisperingdeath September 30, 2019 12:00 PM BST
Why is obvious

Money men don’t worry about kwality.

Trying to think of a remake better then the original. There must be one

I will put forward a song Dear Prudence as a possible starter but I am sure there will be some to shoot that one down

Film wise it must be tough

I think it's the repeat mating syndrome in horse racing. The reason people take the mare that bred a group winner back to the same sire is the hope that it can breed another one that is as good. Obviously because the bar has been set so high it rarely happens. The same with re-doing a film, for example, "The Day of the Jackal" with the menacing Edward Fox was going to be almost impossible to improve on.

Get Carter is a woeful film watched it last year as being from the area people seem to think it's good but it's absolute horse shyte imo.

Ben Hur will probably go down as the best remake; not too sure myself
Report Whisperingdeath September 30, 2019 12:29 PM BST
Meet the Spartans.....funnier than the original The 300 Spartans!
Report lovegod September 30, 2019 12:34 PM BST
Would Ben Hur be popular with the transgenders?
Report Baphornet September 30, 2019 12:39 PM BST
excellent

I completely agree with pixie, the remake of 'True Grit' was absolutely excellent, I must have watched it about least 5 times,
Jeff Bridges and Haille Steinfeld were both tremendous. If pushed though I would say the original with John Wayne was marginally the better film but I'd give both of those films a very solid 10/10 job with the thumb.

thought that THE FLY was  superb with jeff goldlum, until i saw the original with vincent price( didnt know there was one to be honest}, both superb but again the original wins the vote
Report Baphornet September 30, 2019 7:10 PM BST
something really spooky about the voice in the original "Fly" Scared me way more than the over the top gunge fest of the remake

For a little bit of balance, two films which are universally claimed to be better than their originals are The Thing and Scarface, although I’ve only seen the most recent version of each.
Report elisjohn September 30, 2019 7:46 PM BST
i remember watching papillon new years day with my  mum and dad,and bros/sisters  i guess about 1980s for the first time, and would have to say the best film ever

Thought the remake of Cape Fear cut the mustard. Original was very good also.
