up to renew soon so had a look at various comparison sites, they keep your details from previous year and got a quote
the wife is on it as an additional driver, has her own car so down as occasional user and only other named driver.
wondered what the premium would be if i took her off and it went up across the board. £25 up on the cheapest quote.
tried another site and same sh1t. how do they work this madness out???

Putting an older female relative usually brings downthe premium. Mature women get lower premiums than men so I guess they figure if she's driving that's time spent when you're not.

They are a law to themselves …..my son was unemployed and that makes it more exspensive ...we put down a few made up jobs and they all come back cheaper ..very weird

that makes no sense. how can her driving it now and again make my driving safer???
i'm a named driver on her policy so interested to see what happens if she takes me off it.

cos if she's driving it that means you're not
Report northanlite • September 22, 2019 2:04 PM BST
well i can't argue with thatSilly
although it is made very clear on the form how many miles i do & that she rarely does drive it

I agree with thread title..I'm still wondering what is going on...someone hit me up the chuffer and wrote my car off..their fault entirely..my insurance went through the roof..after several attempts at complaining..lucky to not die of boredom waiting for someone to answer...I was told its still a claim and treated as such..other companies quoted me worse because of accident in the last 5 years..think I been ripped off to merry fcuk but have very little patience for this sort of carp

Will likely be based on actuarial data compiled over many years from real claim history.
People are strange, hence reflected in the insurance claims of those very strange people Crazy

someone i spoke to today claims it is because married people are deemed more stable but i still have married on
the form so it's not like taking her off the policy is a sudden divorce. totally nonsensical

This isn't weird, it's obvious.

A_T's reason does make sense.

Insurance companies just love women drivers.
Report northanlite • September 22, 2019 11:12 PM BST
no that makes absolutely no sense, her being on the policy makes no difference to the amount i drive
or how well/badly.
Report JML • September 22, 2019 11:45 PM BST
That might be so in your case but the insurance companies work on what happens on average and
their data will show that having the wife as a second driver result in lower payouts.

.

They have stats that say otherwise. Not specifically for you, but for the demographic group that the data you have supplied directs them to slot you in to.

As Bruce Hornsby might have said, That’s Just The Way It Is.

It amuses me when my renewal arrives "Here's your renewal quote; no need to do anything, we'll renew it for you automatically".  I'm sure they're happy to do that, considering their automatic 'renewal quote' is always higher than manually sorting out a renewal myself.

Insurance.  Legalised scam artistry.
Report HGS • September 27, 2019 8:19 PM BST
Exactly lyb. Never renew automatically until you have shopped around. Insurance companies are just like the mobile/broadband/tv/utility companies to name a few, they fleece those who are loyal.

my insurance is due next Thurs, on Friday morning i got an email saying thanks for renewing.
They took the payment the previous day and claimed their t&c's entitled them to.
I politely pointed out their t&c's mean f**k all in law and refund that money forthwith.
They have complied.

To be fair to the insurance companies, there'll be plenty of policy holders who forget to renew and would be thankful for auto renewal.

People who switch every year are effectively taking advantage of loss leaders. People who don't switch every year subsidise those loss leaders. If everyone switched every year, insurance would be more expensive for the switchers.

There are all sorts of people in this life, and whilst I enjoy the chase/search every year to get the most competitive quote possible, there'll be plenty of other people who couldn't be arsed.

^ that is a terrible way to run a market imo.
i know you can argue buyer beware and the shrewd get the best deals but prays on
the vulnerable and less clued up. again i realise the argument will be that is how
a free market economy works but the amounts involved suggest it is profiteering not
marketeering (if that is even a word)
Report Cider • September 28, 2019 11:43 AM BST
It's competition I guess, nothanlite. In nearly every industry, the consumer who puts the hard yards in will benefit over the consumers who put in less effort. The grey area (pardon the pun) is the older generation not always familiar with the tricks and workarounds of the internet. They are relying on helpful relatives.

not everyone can put in the "hard yards" and this is the free market v capitalism argument.
One can profit but is regulated for the benefit of society the other is given free reign to
profit unregulated and for the benefit of...........?
Report Cider • September 28, 2019 12:19 PM BST
I believe in personal responsibility so would tend toward the free (regulated) market.
Report northanlite • September 28, 2019 12:26 PM BST
yeah 'cos unregulated markets worked so very well in the banking sector
