The tour operator could go into administration this weekend, which would leave 150,000 Brits stranded abroad, while the firm also employs 9,000 people in the UK.

Thomas Cook confirmed it is seeking £200 million in extra funding to prevent it from going into administration.

It hopes the threat to the UK public will help it secure taxpayer money but this is looking unlikely, the Times reports.

The newspaper said the government was concerned the company was not viable in the long term.

The 178-year-old firm has suffered recently as a result of mounting debts, reporting a £1.2 billion net debt in its half-year results in May.

Where does all the money go?

They've raked in billions from idiot holiday makers over the years and yet they haven't a "pot to p*** in" all of a sudden?

Who is stealing all the money?

Tunisia Holidays 2019 / 2020 | Thomas Cook
Search domain www.thomascook.com/holidays/tunisia/https://www.thomascook.com/holidays/tunisia/
Holidays in Tunisia. A land bursting with souks and spices amidst desert dunes. A place for romantics, beach-lovers, barterers and adventurers, this sun-kissed land entices and delights many people for many reasons. The Romans loved it, and so do we, and it's not hard to think why with our great selection of Tunisia holidays.                                                            Romantic beach lovers best keep tight to the barterers and adventurists imo.

The future of Thomas Cook is hanging in the balance amid last minute negotiations to save the holiday firm from collapse.

The Civil Aviation Authority has aircraft on standby in case the tour operator falls into administration.

The BBC understands that those aircraft are now being flown to destinations so that British tourists can be brought home on Monday if necessary.

The CAA is "very prepared", a source told the BBC.

The company will enter administration when the stock markets open at around 8am today.

Last-minute talks to try and save the world's oldest travel firm failed last night as more than 600,000 Thomas Cook customers were on trips abroad, according to reports.

One report claimed it could take up to two weeks to repatriate all affected British tourists in a repatriation plan - dubbed Operation Matterhorn - that is reported to have a potential cost of £600million.

As it stands 9,000 British employees are set to lose their jobs later today.....

Notices are being put on planes by airport authorities to say they are being ‘impounded’.....

The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said the tour operator has "ceased trading with immediate effect".

The tour operator's failure puts 22,000 jobs at risk worldwide, including 9,000 in the UK.

It has also triggered the biggest ever peacetime repatriation aimed at bringing British holidaymakers home.

What has gone wrong?

Thomas Cook has become saddled with a £1.6 billion debt following years of mismanagement and over-expansion. It announced a £900 million rescue deal in July, led by its biggest shareholder, Chinese conglomerate Fosun, and other backers.

Why was it at risk of collapse?

The firm's lenders, led by Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds, say the company needed a £200 million loan to tide it over. The banks' patience was running thin, given that they had already given Thomas Cook a £675 million overdraft.

so the company that leases them must take a big hit, massive over capacity in industry so cant see anyone queuing up to take up the slack
By:
dave1357
When: 23 Sep 19 10:39
they will lease them easily because of the boeing 737 max issues.

Makes me laugh when they say "1000s of holiday makers left stranded" Laugh

Yeah, because the planes that were bringing them all back have collapsed as well CrazyCrazy

Its a holiday firm ffs, nothing to do with the planes that were picking them all up

Anything to make it a "big event" for the media CrazyCryCryCry

The holiday makers have already paid the holiday firm (Thomas Cook)

The holiday firm have already paid the leasing of the planes

I can't believe in an "intelligent society" that people are still falling for media sensationalism at this point Crazy

As for refunds for already booked holidays they'll get that back, its called "insurance"

Absolutely ridiculous

Its the staff you need to feel sorry for here

Yet the media seem more interested in running off to holiday camps and asking people how their coping with not knowing when they will be coming home Crazy

I find it rather amusing, stuck and stranded in Majorca for a couple of hours is "not being able to cope"
