The righteous ways of Puritan immigrants to New England shaped the original American Dream.
It was a simple formula of hard work, high morals and an aversion for risk taking.

However, the chance discovery of gold in 1848 by millworker James Marshall triggered the California Gold Rush and transformed the culture of a nation.
A new American Dream was born.

This version was driven by the opportunity of achieving instant wealth.
Suddenly, failure was no longer a sin, success only following from a willingness to try and fail on a repeated basis. Shocked

To be fair, a lust for gold or wealth is what most of us gamble for

America belongs to the native Americans.

Europeans and others invaded it, to make a new life and make a fortune if possible.

Because of its sheer size there were always opportunities.

Not so much now as it has been filled up.

The Pilgrims Fathers who first settled there....went to America to get religious freedom

But they still had to make a profit, they were not safe until they discovered tobacco, they were then financially secure

They still needed things from England, but it had to be worth while for ships to go out to America, they needed to bring something back

They were also helped by the Native Americans, but that changed to war later.
