The BBC are treating this like it's a badge of honour to be HIV positive.
If the gay brigade really cared they would highlight the dangers the lifestyle poses. Instead, they infer it's normal to have a life threatening disease brought about by being actively gay. Thomas should be warning about the risks of the gay club and especially the chemsex scene.... 'A surge in “chemsex” parties, where some people spend days getting high on drugs and having sex with scores of partners, is refuelling epidemics of HIV among gay men in European towns and cities, doctors say. Despite much higher risks of contracting the virus that causes AIDS, as well as other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), users search online “hook-up” apps like Grindr for tags such as “high and horny” or “party and play” to find others wanting drug-heightened and often anonymous and unprotected sex. The result, AIDS experts say, is that in cities across Europe, HIV is spreading rapidly among men who have sex with men – leading to concentrated epidemics in hard-to-reach groups.' https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/chemsex-parties-rise-gay-men-lgbt-hiv-cause-risk-prep-drugs-dating-app-grindr-europe-a9103881.html |

Of course one's initial sympathies are with someone who has contracted any disease (assuming one has evolved, got rid of the gills and is a grown up adult).
However, there is plenty in the reporting of this that is really questionable and smacks of derriliction of journalistic duty in favour of pushing the woke agenda. If Thomas has kept this a secret who was blackmailing him? If he's kept this a secret then presumably he has not informed any sexual partnerns he has had since becoming aware of his HIV status - in which case one hopes the number of parteners he has had in this circumstance is zero. Can he confirm this as part of his 'brave and open stance'? HIV is, historically, a long term issue affecting the gay community at a disporoprtioately high level. Was he not aware of this and of the precautions that he may have taken - particularly since the gay community has been in the vanguard of driving forward awareness of safe-sex practises? |

It is not just being gay, it is sleeping around.
If Gareth had one steady male partner I doubt he would have caught this... |

You have a point
On the one hand, where one sticks it and who with is a private matter - until one presents oneself as a 'brave and buccaneering campaigner for the truth' in which case I'd have expected some scruting by the media of this area. Instead it's the party line of 'poor brave Gareth' |

so hes kept it a secret for years, yet hes been blackmailed , and i hope hes been telling all his one night stands and gay parties etc that he has hiv, and if he has how come its a secret. .very much agree with hanx. ps seems now story changed a bit, he wasnt being blackmailed, the papers had found out and was going to print. Also wonder was he trying to come onto the 18 year old lad in the club, maybe thats why he dropped the case? |

I've got 2 gay mates, both around my age and married and faithful to their partners. This 'story' absolutely makes me want to spew.
How does having unprotected sex and getting HIV and then putting it in the public domain wallowing in a sea of self pity make him "courageous" as Prince William tweeted for doing so? That is totally beyond my comprehension personally. |
|
By:
It's the normalisation of living with HIV that they're praising him for.
With better drugs for the illness, it's as if it's not a problem anymore. Almost a vocational hazard.. As others have said, where is the discussion about how NOT to become infected and why the problem is getting worse among gays?? The biased reporting (and bizarre intervention by the Royals) does nothing to help people avoid the disease. |
|
By:
the Royals get involved these days simply to be Savvy with the in-crowd & to be street cred. After eons of being out of touch; they now want to be seen as in touch. The fact they know feck all about anything, is neither here nor there

Former rugby player Gareth Thomas has said a journalist spoke to his parents about his HIV status before they had discussed it.
He said he would "absolutely not" have made his diagnosis public if a tabloid had not made threats to publish it. The ex-Wales captain broke the news on Saturday, the day before finishing an Ironman triathlon. Thomas was speaking a day after cricketer Ben Stokes criticised the Sun for running a story about his family. The former British & Irish Lions captain said he had been living in fear of the press publishing details of his HIV status. And he criticised the fact a reporter approached his parents before the family had discussed it properly. "Imagine what position that puts me in. I can never, ever, ever have that moment back with my mother and father of sitting down and telling them something so personal to me," he told BBC Breakfast. "They took that right away from me. "I'm lucky that I have parents who love me and will support me through anything, but I deserved to have that moment with them." The 45-year-old, from Sarn, Bridgend, said keeping a secret had been the hardest part of the diagnosis. "I've been living in fear of it being published," he told BBC Radio Wales on Wednesday, adding: "The tabloids will create their own law. "You'll send them a letter and all they'll do is ignore it. I haven't got the money to be able to fight a giant tabloid in court. "When they do it they'll somehow find justification for doing it. They'll say it's OK, a family member told us something." In a Twitter video, Thomas had said he was compelled to make the announcement after threats were made to him by "evils" to reveal his HIV status. Asked if he would have spoken about his HIV status without the press involvement, he replied: "I would love to sit here and say yes but I'd be a hypocrite if I did. "Absolutely not. It's got nothing to do with anyone else." He spoke out the day after Stokes called a front page story in the Sun newspaper about his family "utterly disgusting" and "the lowest form of journalism". It had dealt with "deeply personal and traumatic events" that had affected his family in New Zealand more than 30 years ago. The Sun told the BBC it had received the co-operation of a family member. |
