Carlos Ramos will not umpire any matches involving Serena or Venus Williams at this year's US Open, tournament officials have confirmed. The Portuguese umpire docked Serena Williams a game for verbal abuse in last year's final against Naomi Osaka.

Williams, 37, called Ramos a "liar" and a "thief" having already received a point penalty for smashing her racquet. She was also handed a code violation for coaching during the final in New York, which she lost in straight sets.

US Open referee Soeren Friemel says the decision is a good one for the tournament, the players and the umpires.

"We have selected the best officials for the 2019 US Open, and there is some flexibility," he told reporters at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre at Flushing Meadows. It's not the first time that we made decisions that is good for the tournament, is good for the players, and is good for the umpires as well to not be on those matches."

"In the end, our goal is to assign the best chair umpire for the right match so in taking all those factors into consideration, the decision was made that he would not do any of the Williams sisters' matches."

In heated exchanges in last year's final, Williams told Ramos "you will never, ever, ever be on another court of mine as long as you live."

And she was not making empty threats it seems Crazy

Players have requested to not have certain umpires work their matches for all eternity. Same with umpires requesting not to do certain players.

E.g Rafa banned Bernardes from his matches for years because he deemed the Brazilian too quick to call time violations (and Rafa announced as much once in a match against Fognini)

That's how a gentleman would deal with the situation.

If officials are doing a bad job then sack them, if they have done nothing wrong - like this guy - they should be supported and the players told to suck it up and play.

Yes though I'm sure plenty of players get to ban umpires from their games.

Similar thing happens in football. A ref fails to award a soft pen to Real or Barca, then those clubs raise hell in the media and the ref is 'not selected' for future matches of those clubs. Which means he can never ref the classico and is therefore not considered a top Spanish ref, which further means he does not make the UEFA list and his career is stalled. Consequently Real and Barca get a lot of soft pens.

I'm sure it was the case that referees criticized by Fergie would then go 3 or 4 years without reffing a United game.

Nadal, "Mr Modesty" himself,  ostentatiously wears an obscenely expensive watch on court, yet seems incapable of telling the time between the end of one point and start of another. 99.99% of other players do have this particular skill.

None of Nadal's titles are worth a carrot, since none have been achieved fairly within the normal rules of tennis. The umpires have just been pitifully weak in refusing to enforce them.

The tennis authorities are equally feeble when it comes to the refereeing of matches involving the disgraced Serena Williams, a player who should have been banned for years after umpteen dreadful outbursts.

I hope the legal system takes note and anyone ranting at a judge is allowed to never have them preside over their case again.
After the "Just Checking vs Lord Muck" case, it's something I look forward to.

I suppose I'm a white male though, so, you know, I don't get special treatment.

What if all the umpires got together and said they wouldn't referee a match involving Williams?

Then the ITF and WTA would have a problem.

More likely to happen with Kyrgios though. I don't pay that much attention, but someone recently told me all his (tour) matches lately are done by two umpires, one of whom he recently called a potato, a tool, and spit at (Fergus Murphy).

not all, but it feels like 85%. Just speculation on my part because ATP would never admit it, but based on this I get the feeling some umpires are refusing to do his matches.
