A student was disqualified from her GCSE exam after she was accused of making “obscene racial comments” by criticising halal meat. Abigail Ward, 16, a strict vegetarian, wrote during a Religious Studies exam in June that she found the idea of halal meat "absolutely disgusting".

The exam board OCR later disqualified Miss Ward from the exam, accusing her of making "obscene racial comments".
The decision was only overturned when her school, Gildredge House in Eastbourne, appealed the decision, insisting Miss Ward had been expressing her distaste for halal butchers and was not making any comment about Muslims.

The school added that no other comments made in the paper could be construed as racist. The exam board upheld the appeal and later apologised for the “upset and stress” they caused Miss Ward, the Telegraph reported.

It also accepted that the board's original letter "describing the frequency and severity of the comments" was "inaccurate". Miss Ward’s mother Layla, a 36-year-old nurse, said she believed the misunderstanding was probably down to an “over-zealous, over-righteous” examiner.

Surely the individual who disqualified her should not be doing this job anymore?

Definitely unfit as can't be fair and impartial, ubfortunately this type is strewn throughout government employment and the orders are from above so 1 clueles drone out another will be put back in.

We know but how does this occur in the first place and why should a young lass be made to suffer for posting a valid generic opinion to be treat like that just because of a religion that's the fcuking disgrace.

How do you come to that conclusion?

I can't make any sense of it, unless it was a muslim examiner. But even in that case, someone above him agreed with him and disqualified the student. That is quite a big step to take. I would be suing the crap out of the board.

Either that, or we haven't been told enough about the case.

You can't possibly be disqualified because of your opinion in an exam.

Your mind is on a par with Richie Burnett's the evolving culture of the country and how we are being groomed to behave is to blame imo.

Exactly.

I would imagine that you could say that islamic law is barbaric and that islamic countries mistreat women and that would be a valid opinion in a "religious studies" exam.  The story as reported seems quite bizarre.

Why do you believe I am talking in riddles? You said:

This is either a teaching issue or a marking issue. So it's the Tories either way. If it's not please give a reasoned argument. Or maybe it's not an issue at all.

The point is that any opinion about religion is valid in a religious studies exam.  It may be not result in a pass for that particular section but couldn't possibly result in "disqualification" under any reasonable guidelines.
