Greenland has said it is "not for sale" after President Donald Trump stated that he would like the US to buy the world's biggest island. The president is said to have discussed the idea of purchasing Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, during dinners and meetings with advisers.

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), which first reported the news, said Mr Trump had spoken about the purchase with "varying degrees of seriousness".

Greenland MP Aaja Chemnitz Larsen was also among those to dismiss the president's interest. "No thanks to Trump buying Greenland!", she wrote on Twitter, adding that a "better and more equal partnership with Denmark" was the way forward.

Poul Krarup, editor-in-chief of Greenland's Sermitsiaq newspaper, told the BBC he "couldn't believe" Mr Trump's remarks. "Greenland is an independent area in the Danish kingdom and must be respected as such," he said. But he said he thought the chances of Mr Trump's reported ambitions being realised were unlikely.

"We'd like to cooperate with the US, no doubt about that, but we are independent and we decide who our friends are." Politicians in Denmark have ridiculed the idea of a possible US acquisition. "If he is truly contemplating this, then this is final proof, that he has gone mad," foreign affairs spokesman for the populist Danish People's Party, Soren Espersen, told national broadcaster DR. "The thought of Denmark selling 50,000 citizens to the United States is completely ridiculous." "Out of all things that are not going to happen, this is the most unlikely. Forget it," Danish Conservative MP Rasmus Jarlov wrote on Twitter.

The WSJ reported that it was "unclear" how the US would go about acquiring Greenland if Mr Trump was serious.

Fantastic idea. Give the 50,000 residents 100k each, let them choose freedom from Denmark and all EU globalist influence.

This is what makes Trump a great property investor. Buy land cheap, wait for the ice to melt, build hotels, golf clubs and casinos and sell for a huge profit.

President Donald Trump said he encouraged North Korean Dictator Kim Jong Un to build beachfront condos and hotels, telling him, “You could have the best hotels in the world right there.”

The president, who held onto his real estate empire after his election, said he made the business pitch to Kim in Singapore on Tuesday while showing him a flashy, Hollywood-style video that imagines North Korea with luxury high-rises and modern trains.

Trump described Kim as intrigued by the proposition.

“They have great beaches,” Trump said at a news conference following the talks between the two leaders. “You see that whenever they’re exploding the canons into the ocean. I said look at that view. Wouldn’t that make a great condo beyond that?”

“You could have the best hotels in the world right there. Think of it from a real estate perspective,” Trump continued. “You have South Korea, you have China, and they own the land in the middle. How bad is that? Right? It’s great.”

Despite Trump’s grandiose suggestions, the U.S. State Department recommends against travel to North Korea. Federal authorities advise travelers to draft a will and “funeral wishes” before going.   LaughLaughLaugh

I think this could be a retaliation to China's claim on Spratly a little island in the South China Sea; what China can do President Trump can do better eg Greenland is much greater in land mass than Spratly.

Little known fact.  Greenland has an exceptionally high murder rate. IIRC by far the highest in Western Europe, so on that basis it would seem a good fit for the US

Trump ain't joking !

Donald Trump has confirmed he is considering an attempt to buy Greenland for strategic reasons, though he said the idea is “not No1 on the burner”. The US president’s interest, reported earlier this week, was greeted internationally with widespread hilarity but with indignation in Greenland and Denmark. The government of the semi-autonomous Danish territory insisted it was not for sale. The Danish prime minister called any discussion of a sale “absurd”.

Nonetheless, on Sunday White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow first confirmed the story in an interview, before Trump spoke to reporters as he left New Jersey to return from vacation to Washington.

Saying the “concept came up” and he was “looking at it”, the man who runs a notoriously leaky White House also questioned how the idea found its way to the press. Trump sought to tie the idea of a US purchase of the world’s largest island – not including the continent of Australia – to his own area of professional expertise, saying it would be “essentially a large real estate deal”.

“Denmark essentially owns it,” he said. “We’re very good allies with Denmark, we protect Denmark like we protect large portions of the world. So the concept came up and I said, ‘Certainly I’d be.’ Strategically it’s interesting and we’d be interested but we’ll talk to them a little bit.”

“Well a lot of things can be done,” Trump said on Sunday. “Essentially it’s a large real estate deal. A lot of things can be done.”

He then claimed without offering evidence that ownership of Greenland was “hurting Denmark very badly because they’re losing almost $700m a year carrying it. So they carry it at a great loss and strategically for the United States it would be very nice and we’re a big ally of Denmark, we protect Denmark and we help Denmark and we will.”

Boris and Priti are also considering purchasing Greenland.
They will use it as a penal colony, thus avoiding the need to build additional prisons in the UK.

Prisoners will be put to work on mining activities on Greenland, the cash raised from the valuable minerals recovered being used to finance additional police officers in the UK.

US President Donald Trump has called the Danish leader "nasty" after she rebuffed his idea of buying Greenland. He lashed out hours after Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said she was "sorry" that Mr Trump had abruptly called off a state visit to Denmark. She has dismissed the suggestion of such a land deal as "absurd".

Speaking to reporters on the White House lawn on Wednesday afternoon, Mr Trump took umbrage at Ms Frederiksen's remarks.

"I thought that the prime minister's statement that it was absurd, that it was an absurd idea was nasty," he said. "I thought it was an inappropriate statement. All she had to do is say no, we wouldn't be interested."

He added: "She's not talking to me. She's talking to the United States of America. You don't talk to the United States that way, at least under me."

Mr Trump pointed out that US President Harry Truman once considered making an offer for Greenland, which is an autonomous Danish territory. He continued to make digs at Denmark online.

Russia is in a dispute with Denmark over large areas of the Arctic, much of it neighbouring Greenland.
Do you think Trump thought up this Greenland thing by himself or did his boss have a word in his ear???
